Why do lithium-ion batteries need to be precharged?

 

Lithium-ion batteries have no memory effect, but they have strong inertia. They should be fully activated to ensure that they can achieve the best performance in the future. Before the battery leaves the factory, the manufacturer has activated it and precharged it. This is mainly because lithium-ion batteries have a higher energy ratio. If they enter the fast charging mode directly, it will affect the service life of the lithium-ion battery or damage the battery. In order to prevent this phenomenon, there is a pre-charging concept.

 

Lithium-ion batteries are generally pre-charged before leaving the factory, and users do not need to do any pre-charging. Generally speaking, it is misleading by merchants to say that it takes 10 hours to charge for the first time. It doesnt matter. The lithium-ion battery system is a chemical power system. Pre-charging is to activate the chemical substances so that the battery can really generate electricity. Without this pre-charging process, the battery is still a semi-finished product and not a real battery.

 

In practical applications, no one can distinguish the boundary between pre-charging and formal charging of lithium-ion batteries. In fact, the chemical reaction of charging has a starting process. When charging lithium-ion batteries, the constant current is too large, which may damage the battery, so pre-charging is performed first to activate the active substances first, and then charge the battery normally.

 

For lithium-ion battery manufacturers, the battery design has a built-in circuit protection board. Under normal circumstances, the probability of overcharging the battery is very small, but if the battery is not pre-charged at first, it will bring many hidden dangers, such as failure of the protection board, self-discharge rate after long-term placement, etc. When the battery is over-discharged, it will cause difficulties in the recovery of the active substances. Therefore, it is first charged with a small current to 2.5V to 3.0V, and then converted to fast charging. Pre-charging small batteries can effectively solve the charging problem of over-discharged batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries do not have an optimal state. Lithium-ion batteries are more susceptible to changes in ambient temperature and show different performance. They will show their best performance at an ambient temperature of 25 to 40 degrees, while their performance will be greatly reduced at low or high temperatures. To make your lithium-ion battery fully display its capacity, you must pay careful attention to the use environment and prevent high and low temperature phenomena.

 

Since lithium-ion batteries have a higher energy ratio, overcharging and over-discharging must be strictly prevented during battery use. Before installing the battery, make sure the battery is in normal working condition, which can not only save time, but also save some money.
