Probing atomic structure, Argonne develops CR2016 battery cathode material
Recently, the Argonne National Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy stated that they are using X-rays produced by the Advanced Photon Source (APS) to detect the crystal microstructure of next-generation battery cathode materials from three different dimensions. According to the official description of Argonne National Laboratory, this research may revolutionize the current status of energy storage in automobiles, transportation and power grids.
It is reported that the researchers of this experiment come from materials science, chemical science and engineering, data science and X-ray science. Cross-field cooperation can provide battery materials and chemistry, X-ray scattering, computer programming and complex data for this research. Expertise in analysis, etc. "This is a great example of large-scale scientific collaboration that leverages Argonne National Laboratory's multidisciplinary teams and world-class facilities to solve complex problems," said Raymond Osborn and Stephan Rosenkranz, principal investigators of the project in Argonne's Materials Science Division.

This structure hinders the movement of metal ions within the cathode, thereby hindering the extraction and insertion of metal ions during cycling and resulting in reduced battery performance. After identifying these reasons, researchers can further improve battery performance.
