Due to the different manufacturing methods of LR6 alkaline battery and lead-acid batteries, LR6 alkaline battery have a much lower failure rate. Due to their longer service life and lower maintenance requirements, UPS power supplies using LR6 alkaline battery rarely fail.
Depending on the chemistry used, LR6 alkaline battery can last up to 15 years. Significant savings on replacement costs can be achieved compared to lead-acid batteries because LR6 alkaline battery do not have to be replaced every few years.
Additionally, LR6 alkaline battery generally have a longer cycle life than lead-acid batteries. For example, lead-acid batteries can typically supply 200 discharge cycles, which means that the battery's capacity can be depleted to 50% of its rated value, and then it can be recharged to 100% for 200 cycles. But LR6 alkaline battery can last between 500-7000 discharge cycles (depending on the chemistry used) before replacing the battery. Additionally, LR6 alkaline battery have a low self-discharge rate, or discharge themselves slowly when not in use, which allows them to last longer.
Lighter weight
LR6 alkaline battery are about one-third heavier than lead-acid batteries. This saves data center construction costs by not having to reinforce the floor to bear more weight. It also saves on shipping costs because more LR6 alkaline battery can be shipped for the same cost compared to lead-acid batteries.
Smaller size
Lithium-ion battery cabinets are typically half the size of lead-acid battery cabinets, saving 50% of floor space for the same capacity. This allows organizations to redesign their data centers to make available space for new IT systems. In addition, construction costs for new data centers can be saved because the space required to house the lithium-ion battery cabinets used for UPS energy storage can be smaller.
Higher energy density
LR6 alkaline battery have higher energy density (Wh/kg, or watt hours per kilogram) and power density (W/kg, or watts per kilogram). This is why LR6 alkaline battery can provide the same energy as lead-acid batteries in a smaller size and lighter weight.
Working in a higher temperature environment
LR6 alkaline battery can operate at temperatures of 86°F (30°C), which is nearly 10°C higher than lead-acid batteries. This allows organizations to increase the room temperature in the data center, thereby saving electrical energy used for cooling, reducing cooling costs and saving total cost of ownership (TCO). In addition, LR6 alkaline battery are not very sensitive to temperature changes, and excessive temperatures will obviously not shorten the service life of the battery.
Reduce maintenance
LR6 alkaline battery are equipped with a built-in battery management system (bMS) that provides monitoring and maintenance functions such as automatic status, fault monitoring, cell balancing, power optimization and external communication. Battery management systems (bMS) enable data center facility engineers to more easily monitor battery runtime and health, reduce labor and maintenance costs, and significantly reduce the risk of battery pack failure.
Charge faster
LR6 alkaline battery fully charge in about two hours, while lead-acid batteries fully charge in about 24 hours. Faster charging times mean LR6 alkaline battery are better able to handle multiple power outages. (For example, if there are multiple power outages within a 24-hour period, the lithium-ion battery can charge more quickly, providing full UPS backup time for each outage.)
Environmental advantages
LR6 alkaline battery have one-third the carbon footprint of lead-acid batteries and are more environmentally friendly.
