Lithium-ion batteries are mainly composed of four parts: positive electrode materials, negative electrode materials, electrolytes, and diaphragms. Electrolyte is one of the key raw materials of lithium-ion batteries and is the blood of lithium-ion batteries. Lithium hexafluorophosphate (LIPF6) is the core material of lithium-ion battery electrolyte, commonly known as lithium salt, which is the electrolyte with the best performance and the largest usage.

 

The ratio of lithium hexafluorophosphate to organic solvent (including additives) is about 1:7, and its cost accounts for about 50%-70% of the total electrolyte production cost. At present, the price of lithium hexafluorophosphate is 250,000-300,000 yuan/ton, and the gross profit margin is about 60%. It is one of the parts with the highest added value in lithium-ion battery materials. The technical research and development level, production and supply capacity, and price level of lithium hexafluorophosphate largely affect the development scale and profit level of the lithium-ion battery industry.

 

Domestic lithium-ion electrolyte manufacturers basically purchase lithium hexafluorophosphate from Japanese companies to produce lithium-ion battery electrolyte products. Before the company successfully achieved large-scale production, the production technology of this product was basically monopolized by three Japanese companies: Kanto Denka, Suterakemifa, and Morita Chemical.

 

Tianci successfully broke through the technical barriers and achieved large-scale production of lithium hexafluorophosphate. In 2011, the company had a production capacity of 300 tons of lithium hexafluorophosphate. The company's lithium hexafluorophosphate products are mainly used for self-use, and lithium-ion battery electrolyte products are configured for external sales. In 2011, the production capacity of lithium-ion battery electrolyte was 2,540 tons.

 

The rapid development trend of new energy vehicles will bring explosive growth to the lithium-ion battery industry. It is understood that the capacity of a lithium-ion battery in an electric car is 10,000 times that of a mobile phone battery. According to the forecast of Japan's Institute of Information Technology (IIT), the global production of new energy vehicles will reach 6.89 million. Based on the average consumption of 40 kg of lithium-ion battery electrolyte per new energy vehicle, the global new energy vehicle demand for lithium-ion battery electrolyte will be about 275,800 tons by 2019, with a compound growth rate of 86%.

 

Industry analysts predict that the market capacity of lithium hexafluorophosphate will show rapid growth in the future. Once the new energy vehicle market has a breakthrough, it will bring geometric growth to the upstream lithium-ion battery electrolyte and lithium hexafluorophosphate.
