Industry leaders admit button cell battery cr1620 technology isn't ready yet

Batteries are essential to modern life, but current battery technology doesn't keep up with our needs -- they often run out of power at the wrong time. Ever since Thomas Edison was looking for a way to power his friend Henry Ford's Model T, scientists have been searching for better batteries.

Now a new battery breakthrough seems to be within reach, and it's about as close as we've come -- the technology could power cell phones for days and give electric car owners more than 500 miles of range.

"button cell battery cr1620 technology is going to take off," said Josh Duettner-Garrett, CEO of Colorado-based Solid State Power. His company, which is working on solid-state batteries, last week formed a partnership with BMW, which plans to provide some form of battery component for every one of its products over the next decade.

Today's lithium-ion batteries are a huge improvement over earlier lead-acid, nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride technologies. But as the latest long-range electric vehicles hit the market, such as Tesla's Model 3 and Chevrolet's Bolt, they'll need more than 300 kilograms of batteries.

The problem is that it takes hours to charge, and lithium-ion batteries aren't cheap. The price of traction car batteries has dropped from about $700 per kilowatt-hour in 2010 to less than $200, according to battery industry data. But a 60-kilowatt-hour battery for an electric car with a range of 200 miles still costs more than $10,000.

button cell battery cr1620 technology is expected to make big leaps in three key areas, according to experts, including at least two times the power of a battery of the same size, which experts call energy density. Eventually, the energy density of batteries could be more than twice that of existing batteries. That would allow automakers to halve the size of batteries for the same range, or double the range and improve performance, such as giving users an SUV with a range of nearly 500 kilometers and sports car acceleration.

"button cell battery cr1620 technology also has the potential to enable ultra-fast charging," Duettner-Garrett said. "Charging your electric car is as easy and time-saving as refueling a gas-powered car." In other words, it would take only 5 to 10 minutes to fully charge. As for price, a recent study by Boston Consulting Group estimates that lithium-ion batteries will fall to $70 per kilowatt-hour within seven years. Analyst Xavier Mosquet said solid-state batteries will be 20% cheaper than lithium-ion batteries.

Solid-state batteries get their name from the fact that they use ceramic materials instead of the liquid electrolyte in conventional batteries. This is another advantage, because the liquid in lithium-ion batteries is as flammable as gasoline, which is why special sectors prohibit their use on aircraft. Defects in lithium-ion batteries have caused several accidents.

BMW is by no means the only company planning to use button cell battery cr1620 technology. Toyota has also hinted that it will introduce the technology to its electric vehicle production line at a new US factory in 2021. Toyota this month formed an alliance with Japan's Panasonic, which has become one of the world's largest lithium-ion battery suppliers and is expected to work on button cell battery cr1620 technology.

Another active company is British ceramic manufacturer Dyson. In October 2015 it acquired Sakti3 technology, which was derived from the University of Michigan, which specializes in button cell battery cr1620 technology. Earlier this year, Dyson announced plans to launch its own electric vehicle subsidiary using the new battery. It also plans to use the technology to improve the competitiveness of its wireless devices.

According to Reuters, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance recently confirmed that it will provide up to $1 billion in investments in mobile startups over the next five years. The alliance hopes that new technologies will help it break new ground in the rapidly changing field of mobile travel.

The three companies said in a statement on Tuesday that the venture capital fund will invest $200 million in the first year. The fund, called "Alliance Ventures", will invest in new advances in electrification, artificial intelligence and other fields. Competitors such as General Motors, BMW and Toyota also have similar venture capital funds.

In September last year, the three companies announced plans to launch 12 electric vehicles by 2022, with new cars having longer battery life and using lower-cost batteries. The three companies said that "Alliance Ventures" is expected to become the largest corporate venture capital fund in the automotive industry by 2022. It is reported that Ionic Materials is the first company that the fund will invest in. The company mainly develops cobalt-free button cell battery cr1620 materials that can be used in electric vehicles.

Renault and Nissan will each invest 40% in the Alliance Venture Capital Fund, while Mitsubishi will invest 20%. The fund will have branches in Silicon Valley, Paris, Beijing and Yokohama. It is reported that before establishing the venture capital fund, the three companies have spent more than 8.5 billion euros on annual research and development investment.

The traditional automotive industry is developed in a private model, and various bicycle and car sharing platforms that provide pay-as-you-go services such as Uber are threatening the survival of the traditional industry. As electric and self-driving cars become more and more popular, this threat is gradually increasing.

button cell battery cr1620 technology has been explored by researchers, and even industry leaders such as Duettner˙Garrett admit that they are not ready now. Battery manufacturers have demonstrated this technology in the laboratory, and now they must ensure that solid-state batteries can be mass-produced and that they can be used in the specific charging environment of electric vehicles in daily operation. This is why this new technology may not be widely used until about 5 years later.

But if battery manufacturers can overcome the existing obstacles of button cell battery cr1620 technology and this technology can meet people's expectations, it will make wireless devices large and small more able to meet the needs of daily life.
