TSLA obtains breakthrough 16340 battery technology

According to foreign media reports, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said at last week's shareholders' meeting that Tesla has made breakthrough progress in 16340 battery technology. In addition to a significant reduction in production costs, it can also achieve a 30% increase in energy density of the same volume. The news said that if this breakthrough technology is implemented, Tesla's vehicle range will be able to reach more than 640 kilometers in the future.

It is reported that Elon Musk said at the shareholders' meeting: "Tesla has made some breakthroughs in 16340 battery pack energy density and production costs, and these breakthroughs are quite huge." He mentioned that if the price of 16340 battery raw materials is stable in the next few months, Tesla is expected to achieve the goal of reducing 16340 battery cell costs to $100/kWh by the end of this year. Compared with competitors, General Motors currently purchases batteries from LG Chem at a cost of $145/kWh, and Audi also purchases LG Chem's soft-pack batteries, but the cost is $114/kWh.

Elon Musk also added that in addition to the significant reduction in costs, when the 16340 battery technology reaches mass production in the future, it will also increase energy density by 30%. Foreign media said that if Tesla achieves this 16340 battery technology indicator, the current 100kWh 16340 battery pack version (P100D) of Tesla Model S and Model X will be upgraded to a 130kWh 16340 battery pack, and the comprehensive range of these models will exceed 644 kilometers in the future.
