Recently, Baidu released the "2017-2018 Baidu Corporate Social Responsibility Report". The report elaborates on Baidu's practices and thinking in fulfilling social responsibilities in the past two years. Among them, Baidu has achieved outstanding results in energy conservation and environmental protection with its leading technology, which is worth learning from the industry. The report mentioned that Baidu has achieved significant energy conservation and emission reduction in self-built buildings, green travel, and construction of green data centers. In 2018, the annual CO2 emission reduction reached 78,000 just by introducing clean energy. Baidu is the pioneer and leader of green data centers in China. It breaks through the traditional architecture through electrical systems, deploys the first domestic full-rack servers with built-in lithium batteries, and introduces clean energy and other measures to improve power supply efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
Data center energy efficiency leads the world, saving 220 million kilowatt hours of electricity every year
Energy conservation and emission reduction are not only urgent tasks for traditional industries. Data centers supporting emerging industries such as artificial intelligence and cloud computing also face this problem. According to statistics, as an important infrastructure in the high-tech industry, the power consumption of global data centers accounts for 1.1% to 1.5% of the world's total power consumption, producing a large amount of greenhouse gas emissions and posing huge challenges to resources and the environment. At present, the energy usage efficiency (Power Usage Effectiveness, PUE) of my country's data centers is generally high, and there is still a big gap with the US data centers.
As a leader in AI and cloud computing in China, Baidu holds more than 400 domestic and foreign technological innovation patents in the data center field and is the pioneer and leader of green data centers in China. It is reported that Baidu Data Center has always adhered to the concept of green data center, with the goal of energy saving and consumption reduction, and practiced "the data center is a whole, energy saving starts from the source", starting from the software architecture, IT equipment and infrastructure (electrical system and HVAC system ), innovatively applied a number of green energy-saving technologies, and introduced AI technology into the data center to achieve intelligent decision-making, intelligent heat dissipation, and significant energy saving and consumption reduction.
The just-released "2017-2018 Baidu Corporate Social Responsibility Report" shows that the average annual PUE of a single module in Baidu's cloud computing data center in 2018 reached 1.09, ranking first in the country. According to the "2018 Data Center Survey Report" released by Uptime Institute, the global data center PUE in 2018 was 1.58. Baidu's performance in data center energy efficiency far exceeds the international average. In September 2018, all four phases of the Yangquan Data Center were put into operation. It is expected to reduce electricity consumption by 220 million kilowatt hours and CO2 emissions by 203,000 tons each year. In addition, Baidu has also actively introduced clean energy. From 2016 to 2018, it applied for and signed contracts for 81 million kWh of clean energy such as wind energy, reducing CO2 emissions by 78,000 tons throughout the year, which is equivalent to the annual CO2 absorption of 1.67 million trees.
Ice storage in self-built buildings saves 4 million kilowatt hours of electricity by "peak shaving and valley filling"
In addition to achieving energy conservation and emission reduction in the data center, Baidu's self-built buildings can also be regarded as benchmark measures for corporate energy conservation and environmental protection. It is understood that all Baidu’s self-built buildings use ice storage technology. Each cooling season, by preparing cooling capacity during the low power load period at night, and using the prepared cooling capacity to provide cooling for the central air-conditioning system during the peak power load period during the day, the power grid load during the peak power consumption period can be reduced, which can effectively reduce the power grid peak and valley periods. The difference can realize the "peak shaving and valley filling" of electric power, increase the load factor of the power grid, and effectively save the actual electricity expenditure of enterprises. Through "peak shaving and valley filling", Baidu can save about 4 million kilowatt-hours of electricity throughout the year.
Baidu Tower also achieves energy saving by recovering part of the cooling and heat in the fresh air system. During the cooling season, the cooling capacity in the fresh air system is recycled, saving 1.8 million kilowatt-hours of cooling electricity; in the heating season, the heat in the fresh air system is recycled, saving 150,000 cubic meters of natural gas for heating; in addition, Baidu office areas use a large number of LED energy-saving lamps , compared with ordinary fluorescent lamps, it saves about 580,000 kilowatt hours of electricity a year; Baidu solar collectors have a total heat exchange area of 1,178 square meters, providing domestic hot water throughout the year; Baidu Science and Technology Park Phase II has three rainwater collection tanks to collect rainwater throughout the year Reuse about 2400m.
