Analysis of inactive sulfide technology to suppress 18650 lithium battery capacity loss
Nowadays, sustainable energy development urgently requires the development and improvement of large-scale energy storage capabilities, such as wind energy and solar energy. Electrochemical energy storage has been widely studied due to its advantages of no pollution, high cycle efficiency, and good flexibility. As a type of electrochemical energy storage, lithium-sulfur batteries have a theoretical energy density of 2600WhKg-1, so they are considered to be one of the most promising next-generation energy storage batteries. However, there are still many shortcomings in this battery, such as low electronic conductivity, polysulfide deposition, volume effect and self-discharge. In addition, the formation of soluble lithium-containing polysulfides reduces battery performance. A large-size semi-flow battery was designed to improve electrochemical performance. However, the capacity of the battery dropped sharply due to the formation of a large amount of insoluble sulfide during the cycle process.
【Achievements Introduction】
Recently, Professor Cui Yi of Stanford University in the United States reported on Nat.commun. a method of adding cheap sulfur and heating it while stirring to activate this inactive sulfide, thereby suppressing the loss of battery capacity. The capacity of a single battery can reach 0.9Ah, and the volume energy density can reach 95Wh/L (3MLi2S8). This value is about four times that of an all-vanadium flow battery. And the volume energy density of high concentration Li2S8 (5M) can reach 135Wh/L. This research increased the loading of active materials to 0.125g/cm3 (about 2gS in a single cell) for the first time and achieved excellent performance.
