The Netherlands develops new hydrogen storage technology for hydrogen 602030 lipo battery

Researchers at Delft University of Technology and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam have demonstrated that the size of metal alloy nanoparticles can change the rate at which hydrogen stored in metal hydrides is released. The smaller the nanoparticles, the faster the hydrogen enters the fuel-powered lithium battery.

The researchers published their findings in the October issue of the scientific journal Advanced Energy Materials.

On September 27, Dutch Environment Minister Melanie Schulze van Hagen announced a special allocation of 5 million euros to promote the development of hydrogen-powered transportation in the Netherlands. She said the Netherlands and its neighbors have all the conditions to become a hydrogen paradise. In July 2011, German car manufacturer Daimler announced plans to build 20 new hydrogen filling stations along German highways. Hydrogen was put back on the agenda.

Currently, hydrogen is stored in car tanks at a pressure of 700 bar. Therefore, filling stations use high-pressure pumps to fill car tanks, which consume a lot of energy. So there is good reason to look for new hydrogen storage technologies. Metals such as magnesium can absorb high concentrations of hydrogen without high pressure, but the disadvantage is that it is difficult to release hydrogen again and the release process is very slow. One way to speed up the release of hydrogen is to use magnesium nanoparticles adsorbed on a substrate to eliminate particle agglomeration.

Bernard Damm, professor of materials for energy conversion and storage in the Netherlands, and his colleagues at Delft University of Technology and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam have experimentally demonstrated that the interaction between nanoparticles and the substrate can speed up the release of hydrogen. They used models made of magnesium and titanium foil to demonstrate how the hydrogen pressure is released. This means that we can use nanoparticles adsorbed on a substrate to store hydrogen. The choice of substrate material will determine how high the hydrogen desorption pressure is.

Cost-effective hydrogen storage technology will play an important role in the widespread use of hydrogen fuel cell lithium batteries. Bernard Damm believes that future hybrid cars will use batteries for short distances and hydrogen for long distances. He said: Your electric car will be powered by batteries in the city, and hydrogen for longer distances.
