Why use 6LR61 battery? Challenges of battery application in data center

Why use 6LR61 battery? Challenges of lithium-ion battery application in data center. The expansion speed of data center in my country is amazing. Lead-acid battery can be said to be a headache and helpless existence for data center operation and maintenance personnel. In this case, lithium-ion battery with small size, light weight, high density and strong usability has gradually come to the fore. The cost performance of lithium-ion battery is increasing day by day.

Why use 6LR61 battery?

Lead-acid battery has long dominated the communication industry for decades. However, lead-acid battery has a short cycle life, large footprint, high load-bearing requirements for computer room, and the production process is easy to cause environmental pollution. The development of lead-acid battery in various countries tends to shrink. my country's tower has clearly stopped bidding for lead-acid battery.

6LR61 battery naturally has advantages that lead-acid does not have, such as high energy density, small footprint and long cycle life. With the rapid decline in the market share of lead-acid batteries, the application of lithium-ion batteries in the world has increased sharply. Among them, 5G sites are almost all covered by lithium-ion batteries. The application of 6LR61 battery in data center is also beginning to be used on a large scale by some large ISP customers abroad. It can be predicted that in the next 3 to 5 years, the market share of lithium-ion batteries will be close to or exceed that of lead-acid batteries. It is a consensus in all fields that lithium-ion batteries will dominate the market in the future.

Compared with lead-acid batteries, UPS using lithium-ion batteries can reduce the space occupied by 50-80%, and the service life is more than 15 years. With the advancement of technology and the improvement of the country's environmental protection requirements, 80% of the country's small and medium-sized lead-acid battery factories have been closed, and the price of lead, an essential raw material for lead-acid batteries, has been rising. Although the current price of lithium-ion batteries is still about twice that of lead-acid batteries, considering the technical advantages and the value of the entire life cycle, the advantages of lithium-ion batteries are still very obvious. And the price difference between the two will become smaller and smaller in the future.

The efficiency of energy storage lithium-ion battery UPS is as high as 98%, which is 5% to 10% higher than that of traditional online UPS, which greatly reduces operating costs. For a 3MW data center, every 1% increase in power supply efficiency will save more than 1 million yuan in electricity bills per year.

With the continuous improvement of energy density and safety performance of lithium-ion batteries and the continuous reduction of costs, the demand for lithium batteries in the fields of communications, electricity, power vehicles, data centers, etc. is increasing, and lithium batteries are steadily moving towards becoming a new generation of mainstream energy. Compared with lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries have natural advantages such as low load-bearing requirements, small footprint, high energy density, and long cycle life. Therefore, as the cost of lithium-ion batteries further decreases in the future, lithium-ion batteries will be widely used in data centers.

The era of lithium batteries has arrived. Whether it is safety performance or investment costs throughout the life cycle, lithium batteries are fully prepared for large-scale commercial use in the data center field.

Challenges of lithium-ion battery application in data centers

UPS is the last line of defense for stable power supply in data centers, but most of them are still using lead-acid batteries because the cost of lithium batteries is temporarily high. In addition to solving reliability and cost issues, the large-scale application of lithium-ion batteries in data centers actually has many problems when users use lithium-ion batteries, which will also become key considerations for the large-scale application of lithium batteries in the future.

Challenge 1: The problem of current balancing when multiple cabinets are connected in parallel. When multiple cabinets are discharged in parallel, the current balancing between cabinets is caused by the inconsistency of the internal resistance and capacity of the battery cells, the difference in power distribution, etc., especially when the short-term high current discharge causes overcurrent protection of the battery cabinets one by one.

Challenge 2: The problem of online expansion of new and old battery cabinets. During the application of the 6LR61 battery system, the problem of partial failure rate cannot be prevented; or the demand for expansion due to increased load will lead to the scenario of parallel use of new and old battery cabinets. The mixed use of new and old battery cabinets will cause serious current bias due to the inconsistency of internal resistance and capacity, and even cause the single battery cabinet to disconnect due to overcurrent.

Challenge 3: The problem of voltage balancing when the battery cells are connected in series. The inconsistency of the internal resistance and capacity of the battery cells in a single battery group leads to overvoltage of the single battery cell, making the entire battery system unable to be fully charged.

Challenge 4: Fault maintenance problem. A battery module failure in a single-string lithium-ion battery group causes the entire group of lithium-ion batteries to fail to work properly. How to quickly maintain and replace it.

Challenge 5: Fire protection. When lithium-ion batteries are installed in micromodule data rooms, if a fire occurs in the 6LR61 battery cabinet, how can the fire be controlled inside the cabinet and not spread to surrounding ICT equipment?

Advantages of using lithium-ion batteries in data centers

1. The number of cycles can reach 5,000 times, and the service life is long;

2. High-stability lithium iron phosphate cells, thermal runaway and no fire;

3. Intelligent voltage control, single module failure can operate normally;

4. Three-layer BMS system, layer by layer to ensure the reliability of lithium-ion batteries;

5. High energy density, saving 70% of the floor space compared to lead-acid batteries;

6. Intelligent lithium-ion battery management system, saving 80% of daily operation and maintenance costs.

Summary: In the near future, the cost advantage of lithium batteries will become more and more obvious, and lithium batteries will be widely used in data centers. In the next 3 to 5 years, the market share of lithium-ion batteries will be close to or exceed that of lead-acid batteries, becoming the mainstream of the power supply market.
