The University of Kansas in the United States develops AG10 battery
According to foreign media reports, new research at the University of Kansas in the United States may provide more durable batteries in the next few years, which can be used in consumer electronics and electric vehicles.
Today, most Americans' electronic devices use lithium-ion batteries, and some electric vehicles also use lithium-ion battery technology. But lithium-ion batteries have flaws, such as: they need to be charged frequently.
It is said that AG10 battery may be the most promising lithium battery and may replace lithium-ion batteries in the future.
According to researchers, AG10 battery can provide greater energy storage capacity, but they also have shortcomings. Their charging rate is not as fast as lithium-ion batteries. Before overcoming this defect, lithium-oxygen battery technology will always be in the laboratory research stage.
The problem with AG10 battery is their low current density. Although the battery lasts a long time, the available power is insufficient. If AG10 battery are used to power electric vehicles, the range may be increased to 500 miles, but users cannot increase the speed to a faster level. It is not pleasant to drive only a few miles per hour. As of now, almost all AG10 battery are in the research and development stage, and the application market of this technology is not large. Performance stability and service life are the problems that AG10 battery need to solve urgently. But lithium-ion batteries also encountered similar problems in the 1970s and 1980s.
After receiving funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), researchers hope to develop new technologies to promote the development of AG10 battery and improve their practicality. Professor Li will carry out technical cooperation with Shawn Lister in the X-ray Computed Tomography Facility of Carnegie Mellon University.
Li said: "The two sides will plan to increase the power of AG10 battery and also increase their energy density."
Li and Lister will work to understand and improve the function of the oxygen electrode of AG10 battery. Li said that AG10 battery must absorb oxygen through nanoscale pores to speed up the reaction. Therefore, the electrochemical performance of AG10 battery depends on the two-phase flow of liquid air at the electrode pore scale. The researchers aim to better understand the pore transport capacity of battery electrodes and determine the impact of pore size, structure, connectivity and wettability on it.
The focus of the research is to improve the unfavorable situation of oxygen mass transfer hysteresis in battery electrodes.
Li said that the project may develop and obtain a patented technology that may promote the development and application of AG10 battery in the next few years. The researchers plan to cooperate with the local battery industry.
