Learn about the mainstream technology of CR1220 battery in three minutes
When the battery is charged, the lithium atoms on the positive electrode are ionized into lithium ions and electrons (de-embedding). Lithium ions move to the negative electrode through the electrolyte and gain electrons, which are reduced to lithium atoms and embedded in the micropores of the carbon layer (penetration).
When the battery is discharged, the lithium atoms embedded in the carbon layer of the negative electrode lose electrons (de-layering) to become lithium ions, and then return to the positive electrode through the electrolyte (embedding).
The charging and discharging process of lithium-ion batteries is the process of continuous embedding and stripping of lithium ions between the positive and negative electrodes, accompanied by the embedding and stripping of equivalent electrons. The more lithium ions, the stronger the charging and discharging capacity.
Classification
Due to the difference in positive electrode data, lithium-ion batteries are mainly divided into lithium iron phosphate (LFP), lithium nickel oxide (LNO), lithium manganese oxide (LMO), lithium cobalt oxide (LCO), NCM lithium (NCM), and nickel aluminate (NCA).

First, lithium cobalt oxide, as a pioneer of lithium-ion batteries, can also be used as a power lithium-ion battery to test the water. This is the first time that Tesla sports cars have used it, but due to its low cycle life and safety, it is not suitable as a power lithium-ion battery. To make up for this defect, Tesla uses the world's best battery management system to ensure the stability of the battery. Lithium cobalt oxide is now an important player in the 3C market.
The second is lithium manganese oxide, which was originally proposed by the battery company AESC. AESC is a joint venture between Nissan and NEC. The representative model of lithium manganese oxide is Nissan Leaf, which has so-called better sensing functions due to its low price, medium energy density, general safety. It is precisely because of this tepid nature that it has gradually been replaced by new skills.
In addition, BYD's flagship product, lithium iron phosphate (li-ironphosphate), has stable performance, long life, and cost advantages, especially for plug-in hybrid vehicles that need to be constantly charged and discharged, but its energy density is not high.
The final result is the ternary lithium-ion battery, a rising star with the highest energy density but relatively poor safety. As for the requirements of pure electric vehicles, the vision is broader and it is the mainstream direction of CR1220 battery at present.
Below is the MODEL3 announced by Tesla in July, which uses 21,700 ternary (NCA) cylindrical batteries from Panasonic.
