Hydrogen fuel is a very clean energy source, but it has not been widely used in the field of new energy. Song Jian, executive vice president of the Automotive Engineering Development Institute of Tsinghua University and deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Automotive Safety and Energy Conservation, visited China News Service on February 21. During the video interview, he said that although hydrogen is a clean energy source, its refining cost is high and its safety is poor. The safety technology is not yet mature, so it has not been promoted.
Song Jian pointed out that hydrogen is indeed a very clean energy source. This is one of its good aspects, but there must be one aspect that restricts it. If refining oil was as easy as ours, everyone would naturally use hydrogen. The current hydrogen refining process converts water into water through electrolysis, which wastes resources even more. The original electricity is finally converted into electricity again, which is not cost-effective.
The second reason is that the safety of hydrogen during disposal is a very difficult issue. First of all, the requirements for containers are relatively high. For example, a tank that stores 50 kilograms of liquefied gas can only store one kilogram of hydrogen. The reason is that hydrogen can be liquefied only under very high pressure, which cannot be achieved by ordinary devices; at the same time, hydrogen is the substance with the smallest molecular weight. If the sealing is not good during the compression process, leakage will occur, so hydrogen Storage and compression are the issues.
The third issue is the safety of hydrogen itself. Hydrogen can only be stable at minus 30-40 degrees Celsius. Unlike ordinary fuels which are above 200 degrees Celsius, it is very difficult to turn hydrogen into minus 30-40 degrees Celsius. Therefore, hydrogen is stable at very low temperatures. It can burn at low temperatures. At the same time, if hydrogen burns, water cannot extinguish it. If hydrogen leaks in one place, it can cause combustion or even explosion if smoked far away, so safety is the biggest issue during use. A few explanations can be mentioned. For example, hydrogen fuel vehicles cannot be placed in underground garages. If there is a leak, it will explode if someone comes in to smoke. Hydrogen fuel vehicles can only be placed in open spaces such as the open air. Therefore, due to various constraints, it is difficult to apply it. If there were no problems with hydrogen fuel technology, this would have been popularized long ago.
