To understand why lithium batteries are always the culprit, one must first understand the structure of lithium batteries. Lithium batteries are divided into positive and negative poles at both ends, with electrolyte in the middle. The voltage flows through the electrolyte, carrying lithium ions from one end to the other, which is the process of charging and discharging.
Usually, there are no problems with this process, but when problems occur, they can have significant consequences at a very fast pace. As for what problems may arise? One of the common problems is overcharging, which can cause the battery to overheat and even further cause chemical changes to the positive electrode, ultimately leading to fire, combustion, or explosion. Don't think that overheating a battery can only occur during overcharging. Similarly, excessive discharge can also cause similar accidents, as the negative electrode contains oxides, which will react chemically with the electrolyte and release heat. Poor quality batteries may also cause the above reaction due to impurities running into the electrolyte.
Don't underestimate the issue of battery overheating, as overheating can accelerate the reaction. Once the temperature continues to rise to 150 ℃ or even exceed, it is very likely to catch fire in your pocket or bag.
As for when lithium batteries may overheat? It's hard to say. Some low-quality or problematic lithium batteries, or in the case of improper use, are likely to overheat severely during the first charge or discharge; Some may weaken as the number of charging and discharging cycles increases, leading to overheating.
