  Walter said that this project actually started three years ago, when researchers from the association and Germany's ThyssenKrupp Systems Engineering conducted a brainstorming session to discuss how to increase the battery density of automotive lithium batteries.

  Their discussion mainly focused on the Model S100D, the main model of California-based Tesla Motors. This car is equipped with a battery pack with a capacity of 100 kWh and can travel 540 kilometers on a single charge.

  This lithium battery pack is large enough, with a length of 4.88 meters, a width of 1.8 meters, and a thickness of 1.2 meters. The battery pack contains a total of more than 8,000 lithium battery cells. Each lithium battery unit is packaged in a cylindrical shape, with a height of 6 to 7 cm and a diameter of 2 cm.

  Currently, in every lithium battery unit, almost 50% of the space is used for packaging materials, anodes, cathodes, electrolytes and other components. In electric vehicles, additional space is needed to connect the lithium battery pack and the electrical system.

  Walter said that the current design of automotive lithium batteries wastes too much space. There are some inactive components in this system, which is a part that can continue to be optimized.

  The above-mentioned project team is also preparing to redesign the entire lithium battery system.

  The researchers removed the individual packaging of lithium battery cells and used a thinner material. The metal sheet is coated with energy storage material, which is made from a powdered ceramic through a polymer mixing device. One side of the material acts as the anode and the other side acts as the cathode.

  The researchers stacked multiple electrodes together like newspapers, and used thin electrolytes and materials to separate the different electrodes.

  The researchers said that in this way, they are preparing to use denser lithium batteries in the same volume as Tesla, so that it can store more electricity and achieve a single charge range of 1,000 kilometers.
