After shredding, the mixture of battery components is further processed to separate the electrodes, electrolyte, and other materials.

The electrodes, which contain valuable metals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese, can be recovered through methods such as hydrometallurgy or pyrometallurgy. Hydrometallurgy involves using chemical solutions to dissolve the metals from the electrode materials, followed by purification and precipitation to obtain the pure metals or their compounds. Pyrometallurgy, on the other hand, uses high - temperature processes to melt the battery components and separate the metals based on their melting points and chemical properties.
The recycling of the polymer electrolyte and other non - metallic components is also an important aspect. Some polymer electrolytes can be recycled through solvent extraction or thermal decomposition methods to recover the polymers and other additives. These recycled materials can then be reused in the production of new batteries or other products, reducing the demand for virgin materials.
In addition to material recovery, environmental protection is a key consideration in polymer battery recycling. Proper treatment of the waste generated during the recycling process, such as the disposal of wastewater and the management of hazardous gases, is essential to prevent environmental pollution.
