  Based on this demand, Maxim introduces the ICMAX11080, a high-voltage, 12-channel battery protection for multi-cell lithium-ion (Li+) battery packs. This device is a cascadable fault monitor that provides redundant battery monitoring to prevent Li+ battery explosion (overheating). Daisy-chain monitoring prevents electrical cascading failures and eliminates the need for costly isolation components in discrete solutions. In a typical hybrid vehicle application, Maxim's solution can reduce battery management system (BMS) costs by 80%. The device features a 12-channel fault monitor and uses a proprietary capacitively isolated daisy-chain interface, allowing up to 31 devices to be connected to a series battery pack to monitor 372 cells. At the same time, the capacitor-based interface provides extremely low-cost battery pack isolation. By eliminating expensive isolation components, Maxim's solution saves 75% of space compared to discrete solutions, reducing the cost of a typical battery management system from $250 to $50. The typical application circuit of MAX11080 is shown in the figure. In addition to cost savings, Maxim's solution also delivers superior performance. The device uses a high-voltage, small-footprint BiCMOS process that can withstand the highest voltage (80V), has excellent ESD performance (±2kV, human body model) and hot-swap capabilities, and provides reliable performance across a wide operating temperature range. To prevent the battery from overheating, the MAX11080's high-precision overvoltage detection error is less than ±25mV over the entire AEC-Q1002 class temperature range (-40°C to +105°C). In addition, the MAX11080 reduces power consumption by a factor of 10 (80μA in active mode) to extend battery life. A unique built-in shutdown circuit reduces power consumption to an extremely low 2μA, allowing the battery to be stored for several years while consuming very little battery power. The MAX11080 has 16 selectable overvoltage thresholds and 8 selectable undervoltage thresholds. The undervoltage detection function can be turned off as needed. The device includes a programmable detection delay function that allows the user to filter out transient actions of the battery pack to avoid false overvoltage or undervoltage alarms. The alarm line uses a 4kHz signal, the disappearance of which indicates that a valid overvoltage or undervoltage event has occurred. These features are very useful in reducing the probability of false alarms and preventing unnecessary system shutdowns.
