The actual capacity of lithium-ion batteries using graphite as the negative electrode is getting closer and closer to the theoretical capacity, but it still cannot meet people's daily needs. In order to improve the energy density and capacity of lithium batteries, lithium metal has attracted attention as the new anode hero. According to foreign media reports, on November 12, local time, research results published by Pennsylvania State University in the journal Nature Energy showed that it is possible to achieve longer-lasting, faster-charging and safer lithium ion battery cells 18650. In the study, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, researchers developed a three-dimensional cross-linked polymer sponge that adheres to the metal plating on the battery anode.
Wang Donghai, professor of mechanical engineering at Pennsylvania State University and principal investigator of the project, said the project aims to develop the next generation of lithium ion battery cells 18650. Lithium metal has been experimented with in batteries for decades, but some fundamental issues have hindered its development.
It is understood that lithium metal battery (Lithium metal battery, LMB) refers to a battery that uses metallic lithium as the negative electrode (Anode). The matching positive electrode material can be oxygen, elemental sulfur, metal oxides and other substances. lithium ion battery cells 18650 are one of the most promising next-generation high-energy-density storage devices capable of meeting the stringent requirements of emerging industries. However, direct application of metallic lithium may bring safety issues, poor rate and cycle performance, and even crushing of the anode material inside the battery. The main reasons include dendrite growth caused by heterogeneous deposition caused by large polarization and strong electric fields, extremely active metallic lithium, and infinite changes in lithium volume during cycling. These shortcomings seriously hinder the commercialization of LMBs.
