Energy density may increase by 7 times, US develops lithium polymer battery technology
Recently, overseas media reported that researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have created the first usable lithium carbonate battery (hereinafter referred to as Li-CO2 battery). The energy density of the lithium polymer battery can theoretically reach 1876Wh/kg, which is about 7 times the energy density of current lithium-ion batteries. It can help pure electric vehicles greatly increase their endurance.
Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago published their research paper in the journal Advanced Materials, in which they stated that they have developed a new material battery-Li-CO2 battery, which can significantly increase its energy density. The current energy density of the latest lithium-ion battery technology is about 260Wh/kg, while the energy density of Li-CO2 batteries can theoretically reach 1876Wh/kg. At present, the lithium polymer battery has been effectively tested for 500 cycles.
However, the development of new batteries was not smooth sailing, and very difficult problems were encountered at the beginning. The lithium polymer battery will generate carbon and lithium carbonate during the discharge process, but the initial research and development prototype can only react lithium carbonate in the reverse direction during the chemical reaction during the charging process, but carbon cannot be used. Afterwards, the researchers changed some of the battery components and added molybdenum disulfide as a catalyst for the negative electrode, which helped restore the carbon's activity during the charging process.
Although this is a great invention, looking at the current lithium polymer battery technology, perhaps lithium-sulfur batteries will be easier to promote or popularize. Compared with Li-CO2 batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries do not require rare metals such as molybdenum as key materials, and the theoretical energy density limit of the latter can reach 2600Wh/kg, which has greater technical potential.
