  Europe accelerates research and development of sustainable polymer lithium batteryproduction technology

  Europe does not intend to leave the technology of recycling polymer lithium batteryproduction to Asia alone, but plans to establish its own production chain. As part of the Si-DRIVE project, a consortium of research institutions and industrial companies is developing the corresponding technologies. In this context, the Technical Institute of Technology in Karlsruhe and the Helmholz Institute are developing a new polymer lithium batteryconcept that will be sustainable and a non-critical material based entirely on ecological and economic considerations.

  About 90% of lithium-ion batteries are currently produced in Asia. However, Europe is intensively using various methods to build its own polymer lithium batteryproduction plants. Si-DRIVE aims to develop a polymer lithium batteryby 2030 consisting of a nanostructured silicon anode, a new solid electrolyte based on ionic liquids and a completely cobalt-free but lithium-rich cathode.

  “What’s special about this project is that we try to cover all steps of the polymer lithium batteryindustry chain, from material development to prototype polymer lithium batteryproduction and recycling,” said Professor Stefanopasserini, director of HIU. His research group is developing a new, cobalt-free cathode material that contains non-critical elements such as iron or aluminum. Due to the scarcity of cobalt, classified as a critical raw material by the European Commission, and geopolitical (territorial form based on geographical factors and political landscape) inaccessibility, this can lead to supply bottlenecks. Furthermore, in the Democratic Republic of Congo this element is sometimes extracted using child labor and inhumane methods. "We hope to significantly increase the lithium content in the cathode coating compared to conventional materials, thereby significantly increasing the energy density," Passerini said.

  The five partners will also study its closed-loop economy concept to identify further applications. In this case, the "younger" batteries of electric vehicles can be grouped together as fixed storage units. The anode and electrolyte concepts also need to follow this sustainability concept in order to ultimately achieve a recycling rate of more than 50%. The anode's nanostructure is engineered with a high-quality load to achieve its ultra-long-term stability.

  The anode structure is optimized through modeling to buffer volume expansion and mechanical deformation as much as possible while maintaining maximum energy density. The newly developed solid electrolyte is based on ionic liquids and has higher stability, higher safety and lower flammability under high pressure.
