The energy density of lithium batteries is typically measured in watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg) or watt-hours per liter (Wh/L). Currently, the energy density of commercial lithium-ion batteries ranges from about 100 to 300 Wh/kg, with some advanced batteries reaching up to 350 Wh/kg or more. This is significantly higher than the energy density of other rechargeable battery chemistries, such as nickel-cadmium (NiCd) and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH).

The high energy density of lithium batteries has several advantages. Firstly, it allows for longer battery life in portable devices, reducing the need for frequent recharging. In electric vehicles, it enables longer driving ranges on a single charge, making them more practical and convenient for daily use. Secondly, the high energy density allows for smaller and lighter battery packs, which can improve the design and performance of portable devices and electric vehicles.

However, there are also some challenges associated with high energy density lithium batteries. One of the main concerns is safety. As the energy density increases, the risk of thermal runaway and fire also increases. Therefore, strict safety measures are required in the design and manufacturing of lithium batteries to ensure their safe operation. Additionally, the high cost of materials and manufacturing processes for high energy density batteries can make them more expensive than lower energy density alternatives.
