First, avoid overcharging and deep discharging. Most lithium-ion batteries have a recommended voltage range (3.0V to 4.2V per cell for lithium cobalt oxide variants), and exceeding these limits triggers excessive chemical reactions. Regular inspection for signs of swelling (e.g., a bulging back cover on smartphones) allows for early replacement before the issue escalates.

Lastly, firmware and software management in smart devices helps. Many modern devices use battery management systems (BMS) that regulate charging current and voltage; keeping the device’s software updated ensures the BMS functions correctly. Avoiding intensive tasks (e.g., gaming while charging) reduces heat buildup during use, further mitigating swelling risks. By combining these practices, users can significantly extend battery lifespan and prevent dangerous swelling.
