Lithium-ion battery swelling, caused by the accumulation of gas (primarily carbon dioxide and hydrogen) from electrolyte decomposition or internal short circuits, can compromise safety and performance. Preventing swelling requires a combination of proper usage, maintenance, and storage practices.
First, avoid overcharging and deep discharging. Most lithium-ion batteries have a recommended voltage range (3.0V to 4.2V per cell for lithium cobalt oxide variants), and exceeding these limits triggers excessive chemical reactions. Using the original charger or certified third-party chargers with built-in protection circuits (overcharge, overcurrent, and short-circuit protection) is critical—unregulated chargers often lack these safeguards, leading to overcharging. Similarly, discharging the battery below 20% regularly strains the cells; keeping the charge level between 20% and 80% for daily use reduces stress.
Temperature control is equally vital. Lithium-ion batteries operate optimally between 20°C and 25°C. Exposure to high temperatures (above 45°C), such as leaving devices in direct sunlight or hot cars, accelerates electrolyte breakdown. Conversely, extreme cold (below 0°C) during charging increases internal resistance, causing uneven lithium plating and gas formation. Storing batteries in a cool, dry place (15°C to 25°C) when not in use, ideally at 50% charge, minimizes self-discharge and chemical degradation.
Physical protection prevents internal damage. Avoid dropping or puncturing batteries, as mechanical stress can rupture the separator between anode and cathode, causing short circuits. For devices with removable batteries, ensure proper alignment during installation to avoid bending terminals. Regular inspection for signs of swelling (e.g., a bulging back cover on smartphones) allows for early replacement before the issue escalates.
Lastly, firmware and software management in smart devices helps. Many modern devices use battery management systems (BMS) that regulate charging current and voltage; keeping the device’s software updated ensures the BMS functions correctly. Avoiding intensive tasks (e.g., gaming while charging) reduces heat buildup during use, further mitigating swelling risks. By combining these practices, users can significantly extend battery lifespan and prevent dangerous swelling.
