Lithium Battery Safety Performance Testing Technology

source:Industry News release time:2025-07-29 Hits:     Popular:AG11 battery

Lithium battery safety performance testing technology is a comprehensive system of detection methods designed to evaluate the safety of lithium-ion batteries under various conditions, ensuring they meet international standards and avoid hazards such as overheating, fire, or explosion. This technology covers multiple aspects, including electrical, thermal, mechanical, and environmental tests, each targeting specific failure modes.

Electrical safety testing includes overcharge and over-discharge tests, which simulate extreme charging and discharging conditions to observe whether the battery swells, leaks, or catches fire. Short-circuit tests, both external and internal, assess the battery’s response to sudden current surges—external short-circuits use low-resistance wires to connect the positive and negative electrodes, while internal tests simulate separator damage. Charge-discharge cycle tests evaluate long-term stability, ensuring the battery remains safe after hundreds or thousands of cycles.

Thermal safety testing is critical due to lithium batteries’ sensitivity to temperature. High-temperature storage tests expose batteries to elevated temperatures (60–150°C) to check for thermal runaway, while thermal shock tests alternate between extreme hot and cold environments to assess structural integrity. The heat abuse test, where a flame or high-temperature source is applied directly to the battery, determines its resistance to external heat sources.

Mechanical testing includes crush, impact, and puncture tests. Crush tests apply pressure to the battery’s surface to simulate compression in accidents; impact tests use a weighted hammer to mimic collisions; puncture tests insert a sharp object into the battery to simulate internal damage. These tests evaluate whether mechanical stress triggers short circuits or thermal runaway.

Environmental testing covers humidity resistance and vibration tests. Humidity tests expose batteries to high humidity (90–95% RH) to check for corrosion or performance degradation, while vibration tests simulate transportation or usage conditions to ensure structural stability. Advanced technologies like thermal imaging and gas emission analysis are also used to monitor real-time changes during testing, providing insights into potential safety risks. Compliance with standards such as UN38.3, IEC 62133, and UL 1642 ensures that lithium batteries are safe for transportation, storage, and use.
