What is the Difference Between Lithium Batteries and Battery Cells?

source:Industry News release time:2025-07-19 Hits:     Popular:AG11 battery

Lithium batteries and battery cells are related but distinct components in energy storage systems, differing in structure, functionality, and application. A lithium battery cell is the fundamental unit of energy storage, consisting of an anode, cathode, electrolyte, separator, and casing. It generates electrical energy through chemical reactions between lithium ions and the electrode materials (e.g., lithium cobalt oxide, lithium iron phosphate). Cells are typically categorized by their chemistry (e.g., Li-ion, Li-polymer) and form factors (e.g., cylindrical 18650, prismatic, pouch). They produce a nominal voltage of 3.2–3.7V, depending on the chemistry, and their capacity ranges from a few hundred mAh (for small devices) to several Ah (for industrial use).

A lithium battery, by contrast, is a complete energy storage device composed of one or more cells, along with a protective circuit module (PCM) or battery management system (BMS). The BMS regulates charging and discharging, prevents overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, and short circuits, and balances cell voltages in multi-cell configurations. Batteries also include a casing, connectors, and sometimes thermal management systems. For example, a smartphone battery combines a Li-polymer pouch cell with a BMS and a protective casing, while an electric vehicle (EV) battery pack integrates thousands of cylindrical 21700 cells with an advanced BMS, cooling systems, and structural housing.

Key differences lie in their roles: cells are raw energy sources, while batteries are ready-to-use systems with safety and regulatory features. Cells cannot be directly used in most devices due to their lack of protection, whereas batteries are engineered for specific applications, ensuring safe and efficient operation. Additionally, batteries often combine cells in series (to increase voltage) or parallel (to increase capacity). For instance, a 12V lithium battery might consist of four 3.7V cells in series, while a high-capacity power bank may use multiple cells in parallel to boost runtime.
