Electric vehicles still waiting for 102450 polymer battery technology

 

Why have electric vehicle (EV) sales been stagnant? The answer remains the same. Have we not repeated it enough? Batteries, batteries, batteries!

 

Automotive engineers certainly know this, and material scientists are no exception. And while consumers seem to admire TSLA's achievements, they don't understand why its success with EVs can't be extended to mid-range and entry-level models.

 

General Motors recently pointed the finger at lack of market demand. Plug In America attributed it to a lack of awareness and lack of availability of EVs in general. According to a report released by Plug In America in April, some dealers are not very keen to invest more in plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs).

 

Both views are correct. Demand is weak at the low end of the market, and availability and awareness of EVs are clearly lacking.

 

The question is, why? The answer is again, batteries!

 

The average household income of a Ford Focus electric car owner is $199,000 per year, while the average household income of a gasoline Focus owner is $77,000 per year.

 

According to a recent survey conducted by TrueCar.com, people with higher incomes are more likely to buy electric cars. For example, the average household income of a Ford Focus electric car owner is about $199,000 per year, while the average annual income of a gasoline Focus owner is $77,000. Similarly, the average annual income of a Fiat 500e electric car owner is about $145,000, while the average annual household income of a gasoline Fiat 500 owner is $73,000.

 

John Krafcik, president of TrueCar, said that wealthy car buyers are better at negotiating and therefore want a car with lower operating costs. This ignores the fact that wealthy car owners can afford a second or third car with less practicality. Car owners with more limited budgets cannot. If they can afford a second car, that will be a powerful driver of the electric car market.

 

Over the next few years, economies of scale will drive electric car technology forward. Batteries will get cheaper; car prices will drop, and car sales will start to grow. The overall penetration of battery-powered electric cars will increase, perhaps to 5% or even 10%.

 

But if you want the explosive sales growth that will allow us to say goodbye to gasoline, you'll have to be lucky. The economics are not there yet. For that, we need so-called Godbattery batteries with 300 miles of range and prices around $100/kWh.

 

This is of course a difficult task. We all know this because we have heard countless times over the past 25 years about the development of new battery chemistries, from sodium sulfur batteries, nickel iron batteries, nickel metal hydride batteries, advanced lead acid batteries, lithium batteries, lithium air batteries, lithium sulfur batteries, aluminum air batteries, and so on. And now we are still waiting. Apparently, this thing is much harder than it looks on the surface.
