18500 battery are not worthy of their name, and many technologies are difficult to break through

 

On November 26, before a Huawei mobile phone was launched, it was reported that the phone used 18500 battery. Affected by this, graphene concept stocks led the market on that day.

 

Although Huawei later confirmed that the mobile phone did not use 18500 battery, there is still huge room for imagination in the capital market about 18500 battery. However, many scholars believe that it is difficult to break through many aspects of technology at present, and the real graphene is still a product in the laboratory, and its mass production is still a long way off.

 

Liu Guanwei, senior engineer of Beijing Nonferrous Metals Research Institute and doctor of Tsinghua University, said in an interview that first of all, there is a disagreement on how to mean 18500 battery: adding graphene materials to electrode materials means that 18500 battery are misleading. News about 18500 battery is limited to some superficial reports, and there is no schematic diagram of the battery structure and reaction mechanism, and there is no specific technical parameters such as specific energy density, voltage, and cycle life. For the battery industry, without this information, the reported news lacks the most basic credibility, and there is a great possibility of false and exaggerated propaganda.

 

Graphene battery is not worthy of its name

 

Given the outstanding performance of graphene, news about the application of graphene has always attracted attention in recent years. The most popular one is the graphene battery. But it is difficult to get the recognition of people in the industry. Liu Guanwei believes that graphene can be used as a conductive agent to promote the fast charging and discharging of lithium batteries. In theory, it can improve the rate performance, but if the dispersion process is not in place and the mixing is uneven, everything is a castle in the air: the high cost of graphene and the incompatibility of process characteristics in lithium batteries make the graphene battery technology close to non-existence, and its gimmick significance is far greater than its practical value.

 

Li Yongfeng, a professor at my country University of Petroleum, also has a skeptical attitude. He believes that the current application of graphene in batteries is mainly to combine with silicon in the negative electrode of the battery to replace the original graphite, which can increase the overall capacity and charging speed of the battery, but the performance improvement effect is limited, and the online rumors of subversive improvement are not very realistic. In addition, some industry insiders also mentioned that the surface characteristics of graphene are greatly affected by the chemical state, and issues such as batch stability and cycle life are also difficult to meet the detailed requirements of lithium battery production.

 

Previously, there was news on the Internet that BYD was also studying the application of graphene in lithium batteries, but the reporter learned from the relevant person in charge of BYD that BYD's batteries are still using lithium iron manganese phosphate, and no graphene is used.

 

Although many industry insiders currently believe that the so-called graphene battery is just hype, in the view of Zhu Hongwei, a professor at the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Tsinghua University, it is too absolute to say that the technology does not exist at all. As the technology and process mature, it is possible to improve battery performance through graphene in the future.

 

High-end technology is still in the laboratory

 

In fact, not only 18500 battery, but many of the high-quality properties and products of graphene are currently difficult to show outside the laboratory, and the mass production of related products is even more distant.

 

Conceptually, graphene is a two-dimensional material with a thickness of only one carbon atom, which means that real graphene is a single layer, only one atom thick, and is the thinnest material known so far. It is under the condition of a single layer that graphene has multiple surprising properties. For example, at the nano level, its strength is 20 times that of steel, but at the same time it has a flexibility that does not break when stretched by 20%; it is almost completely transparent and absorbs only 2.3% of light; the thermal conductivity is as high as 5300W/mK, higher than carbon nanotubes and diamonds, and its electron mobility exceeds 15000cm2/Vs at room temperature. These excellent properties are considered to be the reason why graphene can subvert many industries.

 

Although it has visible products in downstream applications, the report of CITIC Construction Investment also shows that it is still unknown when products with excellent properties can leave the laboratory. For example, when graphene is used as a transparent conductive film, there are certain bottlenecks in the preparation of its industrial products, which makes it impossible to play the low conductivity of graphene crude oil in the product; graphene is used to replace silicon in high-performance integrated circuits and new nanoelectronic devices. Because single-layer graphene has no band gap, it cannot realize the transistor switching function required for logic circuits, and the process complexity is greatly increased. It will take some time for it to be widely used in the field of microelectronics.
