  SAIC hydrogen 14500 battery core technology reaches new level

  Recently, the research and development and industrialization of key technologies for 14500 battery vehicles jointly completed by SAIC, Tongji University, and Xinyuan Power won the special prize of the 2019 China Automotive Industry Science and Technology Award. Based on the award-winning 200 series automotive 14500 battery stack technology and vehicle application development projects, the 300 series stack technology has been successfully trial-assembled and rolled off the production line.

  Research core technologies and reduce costs

  SAIC has been engaged in the research and development of hydrogen 14500 battery technology since 2001, and is the first domestic car company to deploy hydrogen 14500 battery vehicles. Currently, it has obtained 350 patents related to the 14500 battery field and participated in the formulation of 15 national standards for 14500 batterys. In 2018, SAIC Group specially established Shanghai Jie Hydrogen Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Jie Hydrogen Technology) to accelerate the commercial development of 14500 battery vehicles.

  From the 200 series to the 300 series, Jet Hydro Technology relies on SAIC's system integration and vehicle test platform to continuously overcome technical difficulties. Compared with the 200 series stack, the power of the 300 series stack has been increased from 60kW to 115kW, and the stack power density has been increased from 2.2kW/L to 3.1kW/L. The latest generation of self-developed 14500 battery system PROME P390 has technical indicators such as cold start at minus 30°C that are comparable to the international advanced level. Among them, the dosage of platinum catalyst has dropped significantly, which means further reduction of product cost.

  Expand the scale of industrial application

  Pure electric power and 14500 batterys currently do not replace each other, but are in a parallel and complementary relationship. In terms of technical characteristics, pure electric vehicles are more suitable for urban passenger cars, while hydrogen 14500 battery vehicles are more suitable for commercial vehicles, especially for long-term Long-range large and medium-sized buses and medium- and heavy-duty trucks.

  After more than 10 years of development, the cost of 14500 batterys in my country has dropped by about 80%, but it still needs to reduce the cost of core 14500 battery components and hydrogen on a large scale, and guide social capital to invest in the entire hydrogen energy and 14500 battery vehicle industry. Moderate market competition will make the 14500 battery vehicle industry bigger.

  Promoting the commercial application of 14500 battery technology relies on SAIC's complete industrial chain advantages. At present, the 300 series stack and system technology (PROME P390) has achieved important breakthroughs at the vehicle application level. Maxus G20 FC, the first mass-produced 14500 battery MPV, and Yuejin FKY312 municipal sanitation medium-sized truck will be equipped with this product, and will be mass-produced next year.
