Domestic ternary 14500 battery technology lags behind, Japan and South Korea "invade" to grab territory

 

Statistical data released by the National Passenger Car Market Information Joint Conference on December 8 showed that in November this year, domestic new energy vehicle sales increased by 2.4 times year-on-year. However, the outbreak of new energy vehicles has made domestic automakers overjoyed but caught off guard. Manufacturers such as BAIC New Energy, SAIC Passenger Vehicles, and JAC have revealed to reporters that there has been a phenomenon of insufficient production of new energy vehicles, and the key component power lithium batteries are in short supply.

 

Against this background, domestic power 14500 battery manufacturers have begun to expand production on a large scale. However, with concentrated investment, domestic battery companies are likely to face problems such as overproduction in the future.

 

Battery supply and demand are in short supply to boost company performance

 

Recently, Tianneng Power, a power 14500 battery production company, announced that it is expected to add at least 4 production lines next year with a total output of 1 GWh, which will meet the battery supply requirements of 150,000 to 200,000 electric vehicles.

 

It is understood that Guoxuan High-tech, one of the mainstream power 14500 battery suppliers in China, has also announced expansion recently, and it is expected to put into production a 240 million ampere-hour power 14500 battery production line next year. Penghui Energy said in a recent announcement that the future additional production will focus on power lithium batteries.

 

According to the China Passenger Car Association, the domestic sales of new energy passenger cars last month were 24,664, a year-on-year increase of 2.4 times. However, while the sales of new energy vehicles are rising, power lithium batteries are in short supply.

 

At present, our new energy vehicle production is insufficient. Wang Shuili, marketing director of BAIC New Energy Marketing Company, told reporters that with the further increase in demand for new energy vehicles, BAIC New Energy's original annual production of 20,000 vehicles can no longer meet the demand. Since September, BAIC has begun to allocate part of the production of traditional fuel vehicles to new energy vehicles. However, this has to face another problem, the supply of power lithium batteries can not keep up.

 

The relevant person in charge of JAC New Energy also told reporters that the key factor currently restricting the production of JAC new energy vehicles is the shortage of power lithium batteries.

 

In the situation of supply and demand, the performance of power 14500 battery manufacturers has increased significantly. Guoxuan High-tech's net profit in the third quarter increased by 384.29% year-on-year, and Tianneng Power's 14500 battery sales in the first half of the year increased by 1.2 times to 189 million yuan. According to Wind data, in the third quarter, the net profit of more than 40 power 14500 battery concept stocks participating in the statistics increased by 93.74% year-on-year.

 

Next year, the output of power lithium batteries will explode

 

However, the overall expansion of power 14500 battery companies also faces hidden worries.

 

At present, most domestic battery companies are expanding their production of lithium iron phosphate batteries. A battery technology expert told reporters that the general direction of passenger car power lithium batteries is now ternary material batteries.

 

It is understood that according to the "Implementation Methods for Key Special Projects of New Energy Vehicles in the National Key R&D Plan (Draft for Comments)" announced by the Ministry of Science and Technology at the beginning of this year, it is clearly stated that the monomer specific energy of passenger car power lithium batteries will reach 200 watt-hours/kilogram by the end of 2015, which is doubled from 2010; and reach 300 watt-hours/kilogram in 2020.

 

Such energy standards cannot be achieved by lithium iron phosphate batteries. The above-mentioned battery technology expert told reporters that the energy density of the better domestic power 14500 battery modules is 130 watt-hours/kilogram. In his opinion, domestic battery companies are lagging behind in the technology of ternary batteries.

 

The technical threshold of power lithium batteries is not high. A person in charge of a charging facility company told reporters that this makes it easy for the company to put into production, and at the same time causes many battery companies with weak strength to blindly expand production to compete for the market, and power 14500 battery companies generally ignore technology research and development.

 

In late October this year, Samsung SDI and LG Chem completed their battery production bases in my country. Among them, Samsung SDI's annual production of power lithium batteries is enough to assemble 40,000 new energy vehicles, and LG Chem's current production is enough to meet the battery supply needs of 50,000 new energy vehicles.

 

We have signed a procurement agreement with Samsung SDI. A person in charge of JAC New Energy told reporters that the power 14500 battery technology of such companies is more advantageous.

 

A person in charge of a power 14500 battery company told reporters that the total output of LG, Samsung, Lishen and CATL, the four power 14500 battery companies, will be put into production next year with a total output of more than 10 GWh, which can meet the assembly requirements of 400,000 new energy vehicles.

 

In the view of some industry insiders, this will lead to a blowout in the production of power lithium batteries next year, which is likely to cause the power 14500 battery to shift from shortage to surplus, and power 14500 battery companies with relatively backward technical strength will face survival difficulties.
