Lithium - ion polymer (soft - pack) batteries have found widespread use in various electronic devices due to their high energy density and flexibility in design. However, they also come with several notable drawbacks.
One of the primary disadvantages is their relatively poor thermal stability. Soft - pack batteries are more prone to thermal runaway compared to some other battery chemistries. When the battery is over - charged, over - discharged, or operates at high temperatures, the internal chemical reactions can accelerate uncontrollably, leading to a rapid increase in temperature. This can cause the battery to swell, leak, or even catch fire. For example, in some early - generation smartphones with soft - pack batteries, reports of overheating and even battery explosions emerged, highlighting the thermal stability issue.
Another drawback is the self - discharge rate. Soft - pack lithium - ion polymer batteries have a relatively higher self - discharge rate compared to some other types of rechargeable batteries. This means that if the battery is left unused for a period, it will lose its stored charge more quickly. For instance, a fully charged soft - pack battery left idle for a few weeks may have a significantly lower charge level compared to a nickel - metal - hydride battery under the same conditions. This self - discharge can be a nuisance for devices that need to be stored for long periods with a full charge, such as emergency backup devices.
Soft - pack batteries also have a limited cycle life. Although they can typically endure hundreds of charge - discharge cycles, over time, the battery's capacity gradually degrades. After a certain number of cycles, usually in the range of 500 - 1000 cycles depending on usage conditions, the battery may only be able to hold a fraction of its original capacity. This means that users may need to replace the battery more frequently, especially in devices with high - power demands or those used intensively.

The use of a flexible polymer film as the outer casing and the need for precise control in the assembly of the internal components contribute to the high production cost. This higher cost is often reflected in the retail price of devices that use soft - pack batteries, making them less affordable for some consumers.
