Uneven movement of lithium ions can cause lasting damage because it deforms the structure of the active components within the battery and can lead to battery fatigue failure.
The researchers speculate that this phenomenon may also occur in the chemistries of other high-performance batteries, and the findings could help develop batteries that charge faster and have longer standby times.
