This shows that my country has accumulated considerable technology accumulation in the field of lithium-ion batteries in recent years. . The "2018 Analysis and Evaluation Report on Intellectual Property Rights in Key Areas" published by the State Intellectual Property Office pointed out.
The reporter learned that the new energy vehicle industry mainly consists of upstream lithium-ion battery raw materials and motor raw materials, midstream motors, electronic controls, lithium-ion batteries, and downstream industries such as complete vehicles, charging piles, and operations. Among them, lithium-ion power lithium battery is the most important core component of new energy vehicles and is also a key area for the development of new energy vehicle intellectual property patents.
Among the many technologies involved in new energy vehicles, battery safety technology is very important, especially in the context of multiple electric vehicle fire accidents this year. Yan Shijun said that actively laying out intellectual property patents for the core materials of lithium-ion battery cells can effectively enhance my country's core competitiveness in the field of power lithium batteries in the future. For example, battery management system technology, as an important link in ensuring battery safety, is not only a link between users, but also can improve battery utilization and safety.
Obvious shortcomings: neglect of overseas patent applications and lack of core technology patents
However, the reporter noticed that although my country currently ranks second in the world in terms of original applications for lithium-ion battery core materials, the number of Chinese companies applying for related patents overseas is not large.
Take BYD, one of my country's leading power lithium battery companies, as an example. As of April 2019, BYD has a total of 1,209 domestic lithium-ion battery patents, far ahead of other companies. Even in the past three years, the number of lithium-ion battery-related patent applications each year has been around a hundred, which shows the importance it attaches to this field. However, the reporter did not retrieve BYD's patent applications in other countries, and this is not optimistic news for BYD, which is exploring the international market for lithium-ion batteries.
CATL, another leading company in power lithium batteries in my country, also has similar problems. Data shows that as of the end of 2018, CATL and its subsidiaries had a total of 1,618 domestic patents, while in sharp contrast, there were only 38 overseas patents.
So, what do overseas patents mean to power lithium battery companies? Industry experts said that if they want to explore overseas markets, overseas patent layout is the next target that Chinese companies need to focus on.
In addition, the lack of core technology patents is also a major shortcoming in the current intellectual property rights status of my country's power lithium batteries.
Keep an eye on the cutting edge: master core technologies + collaborative innovation
Battery management technology is the core technology of power lithium batteries. If the company wants to research it, it can pay more attention to SOC estimation technology. At present, we have become mature in thermal management, electricity management and high-voltage system management, but battery status estimation still requires further research because it involves new methods. Lu Hui emphasized that new algorithms are still a hot development point in the future and suggested that the company do more related layout and research and development. Battery estimation is a core technology, and encouraging companies to focus on its development is one of the important tasks in optimizing patent layout.
Lu Hui further pointed out that the future development trend of power lithium battery companies in terms of intellectual property rights should be to master more core technologies and optimize patent layout. For example, companies such as Toyota and LG, even if they only have a few patents, as long as these patents represent the research and development of lithium-ion battery manufacturers in cutting-edge fields, they have mastered the real core battery management technology.
In addition to optimizing patent layout, collaborative innovation is also an important part of the company's ability to win possible intellectual property patent wars in the future.
What we should pursue should not be the number of patents, but the continuous improvement of innovation capabilities and the continuous enhancement of core competitiveness, and use this as a ladder to achieve our ultimate goal of corporate income and profitability. Chen Hong, director of the Intellectual Property Department of Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Technology Center, said frankly that improving innovation capabilities and coordinated development are one of the strategic imperatives for winning patent wars in the future.
