Briefly describe the NEDO 18650 lithium rechargeable battery research and development project, which has invested nearly 10 billion yuan

 

According to foreign media reports, Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) has launched the second phase of the solid-state lithium-ion battery project, which aims to improve the energy density and safety of electric vehicle batteries. NEDO has set fiscal 2022 as the target date for the development of such technologies. NEDO has already started to engage in the technical development of solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

 

The project cost 10 billion yen (about 90 million US dollars), involving 23 car companies, battery and material manufacturers, and 15 universities/public research institutions. It aims to address the technical bottlenecks of mass production of solid-state lithium-ion batteries (SSLIB), such as solid electrolytes, electrolyte coatings coated with active materials, and sheet formation of the electrolyte-electrode layer.

 

In addition, the project also develops simulation technology to predict the decay time of all solid-state lithium-ion batteries and battery packs, and uses a variety of evaluation methods to test whether their durability and safety meet international standards. The project aims to reduce the cost of battery packs to about 10,000 yen/kWh (about $90/kWh), about one-third of the current cost of lithium-ion batteries, by around 2030. The research institute is targeting a fast-charging technology that can restore one-third of its capacity in 10 minutes.
