SKI cooperates with US companies to develop 21700 battery with doubled performance

 

According to foreign media reports, SK Innovation (SKI), South Korea's largest energy and chemical company, announced that it will cooperate with PolyPlus Battery, a private company in the United States that focuses on developing the first rechargeable lithium metal battery, to jointly develop 21700 battery.

 

It is reported that the focus of the cooperation between the two parties is PolyPlus's solid-state lithium anode laminate, which can double the energy density and cycle life of rechargeable batteries. The goal of the cooperation between the two parties is to produce and test prototype batteries to prove whether the increase in volume and weight leads to the increase in energy density and cycle life relative to existing lithium-ion batteries.

 

PolyPlus Battery is headquartered in Berkeley, California, USA. The company invented and has a patent for the technology to protect lithium metal battery electrodes, which is the core technology of sulfur-lithium batteries, lithium-air batteries and water-lithium batteries.

 

Scientists at PolyPlus Battery have invented a patented process that combines lithium metal with a continuous monolithic glass electrolyte. Battery verification in the laboratory shows that the continuous monolithic glass prevents dendrites and promotes lithium metal circulation.

 

It can be seen that conductive glass separators are a key technology to promote the stability of 21700 battery. SKI plans to complete the research on conductive glass separators by the end of 2021 and use them in the research and development of 21700 battery. This plan aims to successfully develop conductive glass separators to accelerate the commercialization of 21700 battery.

 

In addition, SKI will invest in the research and development of PolyPlus' conductive glass separators, and SKI is considering making an equity investment in PolyPlus in order to obtain the license of its technology in the future.
