The progress of 26650 battery technology is the core of the development of new energy vehicles

Many famous car companies have entered the new energy field, and traditional car manufacturing has turned to new energy vehicle manufacturing. Capital has seen opportunities in the battery industry, and lithium batteries have become the key.

At the 11th Summer Davos Forum held last month, Dongfeng Renault CEO François Provost confirmed to reporters that the first pure electric vehicle will be launched in China at the end of this year, and this model will be first used in taxi fleets.

François Provost told reporters: "New energy vehicles are the new arena for all automakers in the future. The problem of urban congestion can only be solved by connected electric vehicles, but there are still many challenges, such as battery life."

It is reported that Renault has not invested in the battery business in China. François Provost said that there are many battery suppliers in China and the price is competitive.

Recently, Volvo issued a statement saying that all new products released from 2019 will be upgraded to electric vehicles. Geely has also quietly promoted the development of electric vehicles in the past 10 years. The company said that the sales target of electric vehicles will reach 1 million by 2025.

Volvo China's public relations department told reporters: "Old models will still use traditional internal combustion engines. In addition to pure electric vehicles, some hybrid models will be launched. Therefore, electric engines and internal combustion engines will coexist for a while."

Bill Russo, managing director of Gaofeng Consulting and a senior automotive industry analyst, told reporters: "Although Volvo's 'all-electric' statement is a marginal ball, the information revealed by Volvo is important. Global automakers are moving towards new energy vehicles."

On July 5, Daimler and BAIC signed an agreement, stating that the two parties will jointly invest US$5 billion to establish a pure electric vehicle production base in Beijing in 2020, and carry out local production and research and development of power batteries, using domestic battery cells. Daimler expects that by 2025, new energy models will account for 15% to 25% of Mercedes-Benz's global sales.

"China's policy aims to transform China from the world's largest auto market to a world-leading auto production base, using new energy vehicle (NEV) technology as an entry point to accelerate the development and transformation of the auto industry." Lowe told reporters that due to the relatively short development time of China's auto industry and the lack of advanced auto technology experience in internal combustion engine (ICE) technology, Chinese automakers have been struggling to gain a global leading position in the auto industry.

26650 battery competition

Wouter Ghyoot, group director of sustainable value chain at Belgian battery component manufacturer Umicore, told reporters: "Due to the growth in demand for electric vehicles, Umicore will spend 300 million euros to increase lithium-ion battery production sixfold by 2020 to meet the demand for electric vehicles and buses in China, as well as to expand the electric vehicle fleet."

The cathode is key to how much power a battery can store. Umicore produces cathode materials for nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries, which are widely used in electric vehicles. Umicore mainly provides battery services to companies such as LG Chem, Samsung Electronics and BYD.

"The Chinese government is very supportive of the development of electric vehicles, and there is room for foreign companies to develop battery technology," Johnson Controls CEO Alex Molinaroli told reporters during the Davos Forum.

Johnson Controls plans to invest $780 million globally between 2016 and 2020 to increase the production capacity of AGM batteries (absorbent glass fiber mesh batteries). In addition, it will invest $200 million in China to build a new battery factory, which will become the company's fourth battery manufacturing base in China.

The development of China's new energy vehicles is inseparable from the support of battery technology, battery management system (BMS) and electronic control system technology, and the core lies in the progress of 26650 battery technology.

Data provided by mining expert Kirill Klip shows that the world's four largest companies currently control 89% of lithium production and supply, namely Tianqi Lithium, Albemarle, SQM and FMC, of which Tianqi Lithium and Albemarie account for 40% of the global market supply. Lowe believes that the most important task for industry participants at present is to lock in the lithium supply chain.

"What is worth noting in China recently is the implementation of the carbon credit system in 2018. All traditional car manufacturers will step into the production of electric vehicles. From a strategic perspective, 26650 battery manufacturers are beginning to extend their business from power vehicles to the upstream, such as BYD; there are also lithium mine producers extending their business downstream, such as Ganfeng Lithium's automatic polymer battery production line and 600 million watt-hour lithium-ion project that have reached full capacity." Chen Jizheng, partner of Deloitte Financial Advisory Corporate Mergers and Acquisitions, predicted to reporters that power batteries will grow at an annual rate of 30% to 40% in the next 3 to 5 years.
