New technology that can restore aged 32700 battery and extend cycle life
As lithium-ion battery technology has become more stable, the portable electronic devices and electric vehicle industries have flourished, resulting in an increasing global demand for 32700 battery. However, long-term use of lithium-ion battery products will cause the internal materials of the battery to age and reduce the storage capacity, resulting in the need to replace new batteries after a period of use. The most common charging method on the market is the constant current-constant voltage (CC-CV) charging method. However, this charging method will cause the formation of a solid electrolyte interface (SEI) inside the battery when the constant current (CC) charging stage is about to end, causing the loss of cyclable lithium ions in the battery, resulting in a decrease in the battery cycle life.
Chen Boduan and others from the Condensed Matter Science Research Center of National Taiwan University used density functional theory to analyze and calculate the movement of lithium ions inside lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, and established a sine wave charging model. This model introduces a negative voltage during the charging process to suppress the formation of a passivation layer.
The researchers compared the battery capacity of the sine wave charging method and the traditional CC-CV charging method based on the standard that the battery capacity of electric vehicles needs to be replaced when it is less than 80%. The battery was charged and discharged with a large current to simulate the use of electric vehicles. The experimental results show that the traditional CC-CV charging method reaches 80% capacity after 600 cycles, while the battery using the sine wave charging method still has 95% of the remaining capacity, indicating that the sine wave charging method has the effect of extending the battery life.
In addition, charging the batteries that have been eliminated from electric vehicles with the sine wave charging method can also increase the capacity by up to 18.7%. During the sine wave charging process, the battery temperature rises by up to 9°C, and the charging time is only half of the traditional CC-CV charging method, which is better than the traditional CC-CV charging method.
To verify the effect of the sine wave charging method on the impedance of the SEI film inside the battery, the researchers used electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to analyze the battery. The results showed that after 600 cycles using this charging method, the growth of the SEI film was effectively inhibited compared to the battery using the traditional CC-CV, and the internal impedance was maintained at a level similar to that of a new battery. This shows that this charging method has less damage to the internal material structure of the lithium-ion battery and can provide the battery with a longer service life. Therefore, this charging method will provide a better choice for users of lithium-ion battery products.
