The United States has developed a new 3500mah 18650 battery recycling solution to extract and reuse cobalt
According to the Indian Economic Times on April 2, scientists have developed a solvent that can extract useful elements from waste batteries, thereby helping to reduce the amount of electronic waste that ends up in landfills. The purpose of the research and development is to reduce the harsh processes in 3500mah 18650 battery recycling and reduce the number of waste batteries that are landfilled.
Rice University in the United States uses environmentally friendly ultra-low eutectic solvents to extract valuable elements from cathode metal oxides commonly used in lithium-ion batteries. The newly developed solvent is made of choline chloride and ethylene glycol in daily necessities, which can extract more than 90% of the cobalt in the powdered mixture. Although the amount of cobalt extracted from old batteries each time is small, it is still an effective method for recycling old batteries.
Rice University researcher Pulickel Ajayan said: "As the use of batteries in electric vehicles and other accessories increases in the future, used rechargeable batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries, will gradually pose a threat to the environment." He believes: "Recycling important metals such as cobalt is of great significance. The supply of such metals is limited and their importance to energy storage devices is self-evident." Regarding this new 3500mah 18650 battery recycling technology, Ajayan said: "Based on the current recycling status of plastic products, a comprehensive strategy is now needed to recycle the increasing number of used batteries." The results of this study were published in the journal Nature Energy. The first author of the article, Kimmai Tran, said: "Before the new solvent, we tried to use acid. Although the effect was obvious, the acid is corrosive and not environmentally friendly. The cost of recycling lithium-ion batteries is generally high, and workers engaged in related work are also at risk." He also said that the new solvent is made of additives in chicken feed and general plastic precursors, which can dissolve a variety of metal oxides.
