The development of automotive batteries requires the construction of a development system with the strength of the whole country. In China, battery manufacturers supported by the government are growing rapidly. According to statistics from the research company Techno Systems Research, Panasonic, which has long occupied the top position in the global market share of automotive 3.7V Lithium Polymer Battery, held a 44% share in 2014, and it is expected to decline to 16% in 2018. The Chinese Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL) has taken away the top share from Panasonic.

 

Regarding all-solid batteries, Japan leads the world in the development of electrolyte materials. Keiya Hosokawa, a project manager of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization of Japan, said that "half of the patents for all-solid batteries come from Japan." Therefore, it plans to counterattack with the participation of large automakers such as Toyota. Fujii Eiji, director of Panasonic's Resources and Energy Research Institute, emphasized that "as a battery manufacturer, we must not lose to overseas companies in the field of all-solid batteries."

 

Toyota is the leader in development. Toyota strives to put all-solid batteries into use in the first half of the 2020s. Toyota's number of all-solid battery patent applications ranks first in the world. There are about 300 developers, an increase of about 50% from the fall of 2017. At a press conference on June 15, Hideki Sekiya, director of Toyota's battery materials technology research department, said, "We have made great progress in development and hope to promote practical application at all costs."
