  Energy density 10 times higher than 402030 polymer battery? Honda Research Institute and others collaborate to develop fluoride ion batteries

  According to foreign media reports, scientists from Honda Research Institute are working with researchers from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to develop a new battery chemical. It has higher energy density and is more environmentally friendly than materials used in existing batteries.

  By overcoming the temperature limitations of current fluoride-ion lithium-ion battery sub-battery (FIB) technology, the research team demonstrated the process of operating a fluoride-ion battery at room temperature, opening up new opportunities for the development of high-energy-density batteries that can meet the rapidly growing demand for energy storage.

  Dr. Christopher Brooks, chief scientist at Honda Research Institute, said: Fluorine-ion batteries provide a promising new battery chemistry with ten times the energy density of current 402030 polymer battery. Unlike 402030 polymer battery, fluoride-ion batteries do not pose safety risks due to overheating, and the environmental impact of obtaining the raw materials for fluoride-ion batteries is much smaller than that of extracting lithium and cobalt.

  Fluoride-ion batteries offer an attractive alternative to other types of high-energy batteries, such as those based on lithium or metal hydride chemistries, which are often limited by the inherent properties of the electrodes. Due to fluorine's low atomic mass, rechargeable batteries based on this element have a very high energy density, theoretically 10 times higher than 402030 polymer battery. However, although fluoride-ion batteries are considered to be the next generation of high-energy-density energy storage devices, they are limited by temperature requirements.

  Currently, solid-state fluoride-ion batteries have to operate at temperatures higher than 150 degrees Celsius to make the electrolyte conductive. To solve this problem, researchers found a way to enable fluoride-ion batteries to operate at room temperature. The researchers developed the electrolyte using dry tetraalkylammonium fluoride salts dissolved in an organic fluorinated ether solvent, which when paired with a composite cathode with a core-shell nanostructure of copper, lanthanum and fluorine, Reversible electrochemical cycling at room temperature was demonstrated.

  In the future, fluoride-ion batteries could power battery-powered electric vehicles, and their high capacity make them ideal for power products.
