Researchers at North Carolina State University have developed a technology that converts stationary power into transmit power for wireless receivers, bringing the goal of building safe and efficient wireless charging stations for passing electric vehicles on the highway closer. step. The researchers developed a series of segmented transmitter coils, each of which spreads a low-level electromagnetic field. They also created a receiver coil that is the same size as each transmitter coil and can be placed in a car or other mobile platform. The size of the coil is very important as a coil of the same size will transfer energy more efficiently.
"We made corresponding changes to both the receiver and transmitter to make wireless energy transfer safer and more efficient," said Srjan Lukic, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at the university who participated in the research. The modified receiver can be combined with a transmitting coil after entering the receiving range. The specific transmitting coil automatically increases the current and increases the strength of its magnetic field, thereby transmitting energy with 400% efficiency. When the receiver leaves this range, the current in the transmit coil returns to normal levels.
These modifications improve upon previous mobile, wireless power transfer technologies. One previous approach was to use large transmit coils, but this created a powerful but imprecise field that did not transfer enough energy to the receiver, reducing system efficiency.
In addition, previous methods of using smaller transmit coils presented safety hazards and were not very efficient. This method also requires a large number of transmitters to effectively cover part of the road surface, and requires very accurate vehicle position detection technology, which increases the cost and complexity of the system.
The new system combines the advantages of the previous two methods, with small size and multiple functions. At present, the energy transmission power can reach 0.5 kilowatts (kW) at the highest efficiency. Lukic said: Our target range is 0.5kW to 50kW to make this kind of system more practical.
