Battery systems consist of a series of interconnected cells, which have disadvantages in terms of efficiency, productivity and cost. Each battery is composed of an anode, cathode and electrolyte, and bipolar plates connect the individual cells in the battery pack together. Traditional battery systems are very complex because individual cells are interconnected, with hundreds of individual cells connected together by wires. Connecting these batteries is time-consuming and can cause the wires to become too hot during regular discharge.
Researchers say using bipolar plates to connect such cells could avoid overheating issues and complicated wiring. Compared with wires, this type of flat panel does not have an advantage in terms of weight and thickness, because this type of flat panel is made of metal, is heavy, and prone to corrosion, and is made of carbon polymer composite using an injection molding process, which is not less thick. less than a few millimeters.
"To create bipolar plates that are lightweight, flexible, extremely thin, corrosion-resistant and easy to produce, we used commercially available (conductive) Polymer and graphite, but the focus is on the formula. The formula is to mix 80% graphite with 20% polymer to create an extremely thin bipolar plate. Compared with the traditional method of using wires to connect single cells, It saves 80% of the material used. The bipolar plate we made is very flexible, reaching the level of "flexible around the finger" and very strong. "
Grevé anticipates that these new bipolar plates could be used in temporary installations of large battery installations, such as mobile energy systems, to distribute electricity to communities. In addition, it can also be used in electric vehicles. To explain the benefits of bipolar batteries, Grevé said that a Tesla vehicle’s battery pack consists of more than 7,000 single cells connected together.
