The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) announced on the 10th that Eom Gwang-sup, a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at GIST, and Lee Jung-tae, a postdoctoral researcher at the Electronics Research Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), worked together to develop the latest lithium battery. Compared with products on the market, the new lithium battery has four times the energy storage capacity and twice the battery life.
Traditional CR2032 button cell batteries use graphite and lithium metal oxide (Lithium Metal Oxide) as cathodes and anodes. Since the power storage capacity of these two materials is low, after development with current technology, the power storage capacity is close to the limit. Therefore, the power storage capacity of electric vehicles There is not much room to increase the battery storage capacity.
Therefore, the Korean research team decided to use new materials to make battery cathodes and anodes, using silicon and sulfur. Scientists specially added selenium to protect the silicon cathode, and then developed a cathode with lithium and silicon. In addition, they used sulfur and selenium to make anodes.
The latest CR2032 button cell batteries can store about 500mAh of electricity per gram, compared to batteries on the market that can only store 100-150mAh of electricity per gram. This means that an electric vehicle can travel 300 kilometers per charge, which is twice as far as ordinary electric vehicles.
Not only that, after the new lithium battery is charged and discharged 1,500 times, the battery capacity will only shrink by 19%. In other words, if the user charges it once a day, it can be used stably for 4 years without replacing the battery; if the new lithium battery is applied to a smartphone, the weight of the phone can be reduced by half.
