Fifth Generation Electric Powertrain and NiMH No.7 batteriesTechnology
According to foreign media reports, BMW is working on fifth-generation electric powertrain technology. To this end, BMW invited many American and Canadian journalists to its Munich plant to get a close look at the new electrification technology.
BMW's fifth-generation electric powertrain technology will be installed in the company's first long-range electric model. The system is more integrated, the powertrain and NiMH No.7 batteriespack are more compact, and the energy capacity is larger.
NiMH No.7 batteriesPacks, Modules and Cells
Today, the 33kWh on-board NiMH No.7 batteriesequipped in the BMW i3 model is the company's largest NiMH No.7 batteriespack, and the new technology has more than doubled its energy capacity.
The BMW iX3 model will be the first new BMW model equipped with the new powertrain system. The electric SUV will be equipped with a 70kWh NiMH No.7 batteriespack. BMW showed a platform that looks like a skateboard, which has become almost standard equipment for its large NiMH No.7 batteriespacks in the past few years. The company seems to be testing NiMH No.7 batteriespacks for the BMW iX3 and iNext models. The new NiMH No.7 batteriesmodule will be composed of lithium-ion prismatic cells.
BMW engineers explained why: When it came to NiMH No.7 batteriescooling and manufacturing, they considered cylindrical and polymer batteries (pouch cells), but found that they could gain many benefits by building NiMH No.7 batteriesmodules with prismatic cells.
BMW chose Samsung's 94Ah prismatic batteries for the i3 model, and its plug-in hybrid vehicles also use this type of battery. Although BMW still insists on using prismatic batteries, it is currently trying different sizes and chemical compositions.
So far, BMW has insisted on using lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide (NMC) NiMH No.7 batteriesformula. The company is concerned about the supply of cobalt metal and will reduce the cobalt content in NiMH No.7 batteriescells in the future.
The company expects that the energy density of its batteries will increase by about 5% annually in the next decade. Although BMW purchases on-board batteries from suppliers such as Samsung, the company is still conducting research and development tests on its own NiMH No.7 batteriessamples at its Munich base. BMW's prototype production line can provide the company with nearly 1,000 NiMH No.7 batteriescells per year, which is enough for it to make several NiMH No.7 batteriesprototypes.
Company executive Juraschek said that BMW hopes to strengthen cooperation with NiMH No.7 batteriesmanufacturers to obtain expertise in NiMH No.7 batteriesmanufacturing and NiMH No.7 batterieschemical formulations. BMW executives have repeatedly emphasized that NiMH No.7 batteriescells are an important part of its electrification transformation. When asked whether BMW will make its own batteries, Juraschek said that this topic is too big and it is not convenient to disclose details at present, and he does not want suppliers to feel anxious because of this.
Electric motors and powertrains
BMW is phasing out permanent magnet motors and placing electric motors in the powertrain to create a compact powertrain. The electric drive unit on display is a 200kW system. Juraschek said that the peak output of this compact unit can reach 250kW.
BMW claims that its electric motors have also made several technical innovations, including: a more compact design and easier production of coil systems. In addition, BMW also plans to use this powertrain in different power systems. Both plug-in hybrid models and pure electric models will adopt the system, including single-motor and dual-motor models.
