Xinhua News Agency, Washington, March 1st. Chinese scientists have developed a Nickel Hydride No. 5 batteries that can be used at minus 70 degrees Celsius, which is expected to be used in extremely cold regions on Earth and even in outer space in the future.
According to a study published in the latest issue of the American energy academic journal "Joule", the new battery developed by Xia Yongyao's team at Fudan University in China uses ethyl acetate, which has a low freezing point and can conduct electricity under extremely low temperature conditions, as an electrolyte, and uses two organic compounds as electrodes, namely PTPAn cathode and PNTCDA anode.
The electrolyte is a chemical medium for ions to move between two electrodes, but the electrochemical reaction at the junction of the electrolyte and the electrode is difficult to sustain under low temperature conditions.
Researchers said that unlike the electrodes used in traditional lithium batteries, the organic compounds used in this electrode do not rely on the "embedding process", that is, lithium ions do not need to be embedded in the molecular matrix of the electrode, avoiding the slowing down of the embedding process under low temperature conditions.
"The ethyl acetate electrolyte and organic polymer electrodes allow the rechargeable battery to work at extremely low temperatures of minus 70 degrees Celsius," Xia Yongyao said.
Traditional lithium batteries perform only 50% of their optimal level at minus 20 degrees Celsius and only 12% of their optimal level at minus 40 degrees Celsius. Extremely cold regions such as Russia and Canada have temperatures below minus 50 degrees Celsius; in space, the temperature is even as low as minus 157 degrees Celsius.
Xia Yongyao said that compared with the electrode materials of traditional lithium batteries, the materials of the new battery are abundant, cheap and environmentally friendly. He estimates that the price of this material is only about one-third of the former.
However, researchers admit that the main challenge to achieving productization is that the unit mass energy of this battery is not as good as that of commercialized lithium batteries, and the production process needs to be optimized. Despite this, Xia Yongyao believes that it has significant application potential.
