Committed to developing the formula of low-cobalt active cathode for the next generation of button battery 2032
According to foreign media reports, Cabot was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to participate in an R&D project for advanced automotive technology and received partial funding support. Cabot will use its innovative processing technology to develop the formula of low-cobalt active cathode for the next generation of button battery 2032.
Cobalt is an expensive key material, mainly imported from outside the United States. With the booming development of electric vehicles, there will be certain supply risks in the future. Cabot's R&D project aims to explore more sustainable and affordable alternative materials and ultimately improve the accessibility of electric vehicle technology.
The U.S. Department of Energy has invested in 42 projects to support advanced automotive technologies, which can achieve affordable mobile travel services, strengthen its energy security, reduce dependence on key raw materials, and thus enhance U.S. economic growth. The U.S. Department of Energy allocated $80 million for this purpose, of which nearly $32 million was used for the research and development of battery and vehicle electrification innovations, and Cabot received $2.9 million of it to develop aerosol manufacturing technology for low-cobalt lithium-ion battery cathodes.
Miodrag Oljaca, technical director of Cabot's energy materials division, said that the company has established itself in the battery industry through its conductive additive formulations and aluminas used in cathodes and separators. The company is eager to use its innovative processing technology and material expertise to further achieve technological innovation for the next generation of batteries, achieve low-cobalt batteries or low-cobalt cathode formulations, and promote the production of low-cost, sustainable electric vehicle batteries, energy storage devices and other applications.
Cabot will collaborate on the project with researchers from Argonne National Laboratory and SAFT. The former will provide assistance in the synthesis of low-cobalt cathode composites, while the latter will provide assistance in battery manufacturing to verify the performance of the new low-cobalt cathode formulation.
