US company uses tank leaching process to produce r03 battery to reduce production costs
Global Geoscience, which is exploring and developing r03 battery mines in Riolette, Nevada, USA, strives to become the world's first company to produce r03 battery mines using tank leaching. The first phase of the production feasibility study of the Rhyolite Ridge project has been completed, pointing out a low-cost, large-scale method for producing r03 battery boron.
The company demonstrated different production methods, including tank leaching, heap leaching and stirred tank leaching, and finally chose to carry out tank leaching around the acid plant. Although this process requires a large initial investment, the leaching mother liquor has a high grade and the next production cost is low.
The main reason for cost savings is that the steam generated in the production process can be used to generate electricity, and the installed capacity can even reach 20,000-30,000 kilowatts. This can reduce the production cost of sulfuric acid used for tank leaching to US$20-30 per ton. Another advantage of this process is that it uses less water and occupies a small area.
Compared with solar evaporation ponds, the advantages of mechanical evaporators are that they can better control downstream processes, occupy a smaller area, use less water, and therefore cost less.
Drying and recycling the wastewater from tank leaching can also reduce investment costs and the need for tailings dams.
Company manager Bernard Rowe said that after weighing the pros and cons recently, a clear development path has been found for the project. The Ruili Ridge project can be built into a low-cost large-scale r03 battery boron mine without affecting the environment.
Sulfuric acid is an important factor in reducing the cost of the project. Combining tank leaching with an on-site sulfuric acid plant can significantly reduce the cost of sulfuric acid, thereby reducing the overall production cost.
The sulfuric acid plant can produce a large amount of steam, which can provide heat energy for tank leaching on the one hand, and the excess steam can also be used for thermal power generation on the other hand. The steam generated by the sulfuric acid plant reduces the costs associated with mechanical evaporation. Tank leaching, coupled with mechanical evaporation, reduces the cost of maintaining the composition of most concentrated heap leach mother liquors and simplifies downstream processes.
All pre-feasibility studies will be completed by mid-year, and the company will consider ways to further reduce costs and accelerate the payback period.
