A research team from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has developed an ultra-soft, high-efficiency fabric lithium battery that can provide a more stable, durable and safe energy supply for wearable electronics. It has a wide range of applications and has unlimited development potential. , including medical health monitoring, smart textiles, smartphones, GPS tracking, IoT components, and more. PolyU's innovative fabric lithium battery has an energy density of over 450Wh/L (Watt-hour/liter) and is extremely soft - it can be folded and bent to a radius of less than 1mm (millimetre), and can be folded more than 1,000 times without losing its performance. In comparison, existing bendable lithium batteries can only be bent to a radius of about 25mm, and their efficiency is much lower, less than 200Wh/L. Fabric lithium batteries are lightweight and less than 0.5mm thick. They are comparable to traditional lithium batteries in terms of fast charge/discharge rates and long battery life. The fabric lithium battery developed by a team from PolyU's Department of Textiles and Clothing won a gold medal and two special merit awards at the 47th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva in April this year. Professor Zheng Zijian, who leads the research team, said: "Wearable technology is regarded as the next major market opportunity in the world after smartphones. Traditional lithium batteries are large and heavy, making them difficult to apply to wearable products. Scientists have been working on developing bendable lithium batteries for more than a decade, mostly focusing on using metal foil as the battery's current collector. It was not until PolyU developed a fabric lithium battery that a breakthrough occurred, simultaneously solving issues such as energy density, softness, mechanical strength, and stability. The research team used PolyU's patented new technology of Polymer-Assisted Metal Deposition (PAMD) to evenly deposit highly conductive metals (copper Cu and nickel Ni) on the treated fabrics to make conductive fabrics. As current collectors in batteries, conductive fabrics have the properties of low sheet resistance and large specific surface area. After that, the active materials of positive and negative electrodes are added to the conductive fabric, and then the separator and electrolyte are added to assemble a fabric lithium battery. The deformation test conducted by the team proved that the fabric lithium battery has extremely high mechanical stability, durability and safety. Even after the battery is repeatedly folded in half, twisted at different angles, or crumpled irregularly, its voltage performance will not be damaged. The bending test proved that the fabric lithium battery can be bent more than 1,000 times without losing its performance. Safety tests such as continuous hammering, shearing and steel needle puncture also proved that the battery can provide stable power for electronic components and there is no risk of fire or fire.
