"Stop purchasing lead-acid batteries and vigorously promote the cascade utilization of lithium batteries." In February this year, China Tower's official statement was tantamount to a blockbuster thrown into the lithium battery industry.
But in fact, China Tower revealed that the company had stopped purchasing lead-acid batteries as early as 2018 and uniformly purchased tiered-use batteries. As of the end of 2018, the company has used approximately 1.5GWh of ladder batteries in approximately 120,000 base stations in 31 provinces and cities across the country, replacing approximately 45,000 tons of lead-acid batteries.
The energy storage of communication base stations not only opens up a new market for the cascading use of lithium batteries, but also creates an opportunity for an explosion of demand for BMS manufacturers supporting lithium batteries.
Gaogong Lithium Battery (WeChat public account: weixin-gg-lb) learned that as the earliest BMS partner of China Tower, in 2018 alone, Shenzhen Tianbangda Technology Co., Ltd. According to Hu Longwen, general manager of Tianbangda's new energy business unit, the company's ability to have its own place in the communication base station energy storage BMS market is closely related to the company's long-term persistence in R&D investment and years of deep cultivation in the field of communication base station BMS. Tianbangda established a communication base station BMS team in 2012. In 2015, it participated in the pilot project of replacing lead-acid batteries with cascade lithium batteries as the first batch of tower pilot units.
Years of precipitation and dormancy, while benefiting from technological innovation and the adjustment of China Tower's overall strategy, have contributed to Tianbangda's qualitative change.
Hu Longwen believes that it is now economically feasible for China Tower to switch to using lithium batteries for communication base station energy storage. The current price of lead-acid batteries is about 0.6 yuan/wh, and the price of tiered lithium battery group systems reaches 0.68 yuan/wh. Although the latter is slightly more expensive, it has several outstanding advantages:
❶ is the service life. Compared with the more than 100 deep cycles of lead-acid batteries, the cascade utilization of lithium batteries can reach at least 400-600 times and more, with a longer service life. In terms of unit cost, the latter is more economical;
❷In special scenarios, lithium batteries are more economical. For example, in ecological reserves such as Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, the local government often imposes power outages and gate restrictions every summer in order to protect the ecological environment. The service life of traditional lead-acid batteries is less than one year. The application of lithium batteries has greatly extended the service life of batteries and reduced service investment. Lithium batteries are also more suitable for high-current charging and discharging to meet the power demand in special scenarios.
❸The high cycle and high current performance of lithium batteries also provide the basis for towers to implement revenue-generating services such as peak shaving and valley filling at base stations in the future, as well as other value-added services.
Generally speaking, batteries mainly play a backup role in communication base station energy storage, and they need to maintain uninterrupted DC power supply of the base station in environments such as natural disasters, tight power dispatching, and maintenance. Compared with lithium batteries, this poses a greater challenge to BMS.
Due to the different types and sizes of domestic lithium batteries, retired batteries also have different models. Under the premise that the level of echelon lithium batteries is uneven, BMS needs different control strategies from new lithium batteries to adapt to various types of retired batteries. It also needs to solve the problem of how lithium batteries and BMS can work smoothly with the base station power system. .
In addition, from a safety perspective, lithium batteries are electrochemical products and are prone to thermal runaway under overvoltage conditions and dendrites under undervoltage conditions, which will cause safety hazards.
"In communication base station energy storage, you can think of BMS as the 'brain' of lithium batteries. How to create high-security supporting products based on the cascade utilization of lithium batteries falls on BMS manufacturers." Hu Longwen said, whether it is In terms of the versatility and adaptability design of the BMS, as well as the fast connection with the communication collector (FSU), Tianbangda conducted careful research and development, testing, communication and negotiation in the early stage.
Based on recognition of its technical strength, China Tower also teamed up with Tianbangda to draft standards for lithium battery BMS for echelons of communication base stations. At present, Tianbangda's BMS series products have covered 20 lithium battery PACK companies supporting China's iron towers, and have developed a variety of integrated and discrete targeted solutions. After nearly a year of large-scale shipments, Tianbangda's products are distributed in almost all cities and counties across the country, and have won unanimous praise from customers and towers for their stable and reliable high quality.
"2018 officially kicked off the tiered utilization of China's towers, and it is expected that the demand will be greater in 2019." In response to this, providing tower delivery services will be Tianbangda's core task in 2019.
