DOE Funds $39 Million to Support the Development of Hydrogen and Fuel-Power 18650 battery pack 3.7v Technology

 

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced a $39 million grant to support the research and development of advanced hydrogen and fuel-power 18650 battery pack 3.7v technology, aiming to accelerate breakthroughs in new materials and technologies, reduce the cost of hydrogen and fuel-power lithium batteries, and accelerate the commercial deployment of hydrogen and fuel-power lithium batteries. This funding will focus on key technical issues in the commercialization of fuel-power lithium batteries and infrastructure issues related to hydrogen production, storage, and transportation. The research content covers three major topics, as follows:

 

Topic 1: Electrocatalysts

 

The ElectroCat Alliance will accelerate the development of new materials and processes to develop non-precious metal, inexpensive, and efficient electrocatalysts to reduce the cost of fuel-power lithium batteries and improve the economic competitiveness of fuel-power 18650 battery pack 3.7v vehicles and other fuel-power 18650 battery pack 3.7v energy conversion devices manufactured in the United States.

 

Theme 2: Commercial development and application of hydrogen energy

 

Research hydrogen production technology based on renewable energy and advanced nuclear energy, research low-cost nitrogen-based, boron-based, aluminum-based, magnesium-based and carbon-based lightweight element hydrogen storage materials, and develop industrial manufacturing technology for high-pressure carbon fiber composite materials and hydrogen storage tank equipment.

 

Develop new low-cost electrolyzers with low energy consumption and electrolytes that are not easy to lose and corrode, reduce the cost of hydrogen generators, reduce the cost of water electrolysis to produce hydrogen, improve the economy of hydrogen energy, and promote the commercialization of hydrogen energy.

 

Develop low-loss hydrogen transmission pipelines suitable for long-distance transportation, develop high-performance, low-cost low-temperature insulated liquid hydrogen storage tanks and vacuum multi-layer insulated liquid hydrogen transmission pipelines, research and develop new hydrogen station construction technologies, and reduce investment and operating costs.

 

Theme 3: New diaphragms and liquid fuel power lithium batteries

 

Develop new fuel power 18650 battery pack 3.7v electrolyte membranes with high proton conductivity, high redox, high mechanical strength and excellent thermal stability to improve the operating temperature, humidity range and life of fuel power lithium batteries, and improve the selectivity of diaphragms to reduce the penetration of other fuels such as gas.

 

Develop direct liquid fuel power lithium batteries (such as methanol, ethanol, formic acid, etc.) with the advantages of wide fuel sources, high energy conversion rate, low pollution, and convenient storage and transportation, so as to overcome the high cost of gas fuel preparation, storage and transportation of gas fuel power lithium batteries.
