Airbus teams up with BYD to develop 2200mah 18650 battery for electric aircraft

Special electrification provides battery companies with new development opportunities, but it also places higher requirements on battery product safety and performance.

Foreign media reported that the newly opened Airbus China Innovation Center (ACIC) battery laboratory in China is seeking new technologies to power a new generation of electric aircraft.

Opened in August 2019, the laboratory will not only leverage Shenzhen’s rich battery technology ecosystem, but also ecosystems in China and Asia to test batteries used in a wide range of fields such as electric propulsion systems and electrical systems.

In addition to conducting battery safety and durability testing, the ACIC Battery Laboratory is also committed to finding solutions to long-standing battery challenges.

It is worth noting that in order to develop new battery solutions that can be used in commercial special fields, the ACIC team will cooperate with local battery companies in Shenzhen, including BYD.

At the same time, the team will also work closely with Airbus Battery CoC, which is committed to developing new battery solutions for special aerospace applications.

In addition, the ACIC Battery Laboratory will study how to safely replace nickel-cadmium batteries with advanced lithium-ion batteries to power aircraft systems without limiting the weight of the enclosure. Additional areas may be explored as the lab rapidly expands its work.

Compared with automotive power batteries, power batteries used in electric aircraft have higher requirements in terms of safety, energy density, lightweight, and rate performance, which is a great challenge for battery companies.

This time, ACIC chose to cooperate with BYD to jointly develop new battery solutions for electric aircraft, which shows its recognition of BYD's battery technology and is also a great benefit to the development of BYD's lithium battery business.

Currently, battery companies in the industry have developed 300Wh/kg electric aircraft power batteries. However, to support electric aircraft flying for longer periods, the battery energy density needs to reach the level of 400wh/kg or even 500wh/kg. This is very important for lithium-ion batteries. It's a huge challenge.
