As we all know, the 502030 battery of Tesla electric vehicles uses the NCA series (nickel cobalt aluminum system) 18650 cobalt acid lithium-ion 502030 battery supplied by Panasonic, and the capacity of a single 502030 battery is 3100 mAh (mAh, the unit we usually see on the 502030 battery is ampere-hour, which is mainly based on different units of batteries of different capacities).

 

We are not unfamiliar with this type of 502030 battery. Electronic digital devices such as laptops use this type of 502030 battery. Compared with other types of batteries used in electric vehicles, the technology of 18650 batteries is more mature. In terms of specific energy (the amount of electrical energy released by the unit mass of electrode materials participating in the electrode reaction), it is almost twice that of lithium iron phosphate batteries. In other words, under the same volume, the 502030 battery unit composed of 18650 batteries can store more electrical energy. This is one of the reasons why Tesla uses this 502030 battery.

 

Despite this, it is still difficult to use this 502030 battery in electric vehicles. For example, if you want to meet the use needs of an electric vehicle, you need to use a lot of 18650 lithium-ion batteries, which raises a problem to be dealt with, how to combine them together.

 

The 502030 battery unit of the 85kWh MODELS uses a total of 8142 18650 lithium-ion batteries. Engineers first evenly distribute these batteries one by one in bricks and sheets to form a whole 502030 battery pack, which is located on the bottom plate of the vehicle body.

 

Although the way of packing these thousands of batteries together is considered incredible by the industry, for Tesla engineers, it is just a slightly more complicated math problem compared to the next problem to be dealt with.

 

Stability of 18650 502030 battery

 

Although the 18650 cobalt oxide lithium-ion 502030 battery is the key to meeting the higher driving range, its stability at high temperature is slightly worse than that of nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NCM) and lithium iron phosphate batteries. Therefore, strong technical support is required in terms of safety.

 

Its violent character has caused it a lot of trouble. I remember that a few years ago, Sony recalled the batteries used in its notebook products due to explosions. However, today's 18650 batteries can technically prevent spontaneous combustion or unexplained explosions. However, after a strong impact, this type of 502030 battery still has a great possibility of explosion. In addition, its adaptability to low-temperature environments is not very stable. In low-temperature environments, cobalt oxide lithium-ion batteries are prone to overheating due to excessive discharge.
